The news bytes that are grabbing the headlines now seem to confuse me. I mean there's no continuity, a few of them being disruptive and totally without logic. Let me go ahead without much ado.
(a) Have Relief Camps Already Been Disbanded?
Came across news bytes and in many of the channels and hence the bewilderment, the confusion!
Incidents have been cited where many people from the relief camps have been forcibly sent back
by the authorities who, in turn, have reached a dead end because they've nowhere to go. Their
houses have been washed away/are not livable and in quite a few cases, still inundated with dirty
water and stashed with plenty of muck.
I'm sure all the relief camps come under the purview of the Collector. He/she must be having a
full record of the inmates, that covers each and everyone's background. If that be so, the
authorities are in the know as to which of the devastated places have been made ready, after
cleaning, to facilitate the return of the people. So, my question is, "If that be the case, how are
people being sent back without their dwelling places being ready? Isn't there a discernible
mischief being orchestrated?"
I only hope that the resettlement operations don't turn out to be something just to satisfy
official statistics.
(b) Should the Ministers of the Kerala Cabinet Go Around?
There was a news byte this evening that a few ministers of the state cabinet will go abroad to
collect donations for flood relief. The reason given is that it's because of the central government's
continuing insistence of not seeking any external assistance.
The statement, itself, doesn't gel. What would be the locus standi of the minister in another
nation asking for humanitarian aid not in his country's name but on behalf of his state within the
country? It's totally ludicrous!
(c) The Need to Have A Single Point Information and Action Center.
To avoid blatant lies and mischievous news being circulated resulting in absolute confusion,
the state government must have a center that is equipped with all the important information,
down to the minutest detail regarding the operations and sequence of work being undertaken
and this should be manned by responsible professionals, bureaucrats and politicians.
Only then can it be ensured that the right relief is being provided at the right areas and no
victim is left unattended. It's imperative that the relief operations are directed correctly without
any dilution, whatsoever!
Shall come up with more observations as and when I come across them! It's my fervent hope that things go the right way.
Tailpiece.
The Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund is getting support from everywhere and it's heartening to note that the collections have already crossed Rs.1,000 crores. May the kindness continue to flow.
