The Prime Cause.

We all know that Rontgen discovered X-ray. We also read that he discovered them accidentally when some photo plates were accidentally affected. Any normal being would have assumed that the photo plates must have been damaged due to some accidental exposure to light. But not Rontgen. He went deep to find out the cause and ultimately discovered some new rays were hitherto unknown and named them x-rays.

Every effect is produced by some cause. While the effect is the perceptible change the cause must be unchanging, the cause is also the witness since it sees the change without connecting itself in any way. This is a fundamental truth.

Day and night are effects which are ever changing but these changes are effected only when we assume the sun is unchanging and the earth is changing its position. The sun neither takes part in the changes nor is it connected and hence, it remains the witness.

In nature every thing is in a state of relative change with respect to everything else. In Vedanta it is called Maya. From this fundamental truth, Einstein derived his Theory of Relativity but even behind the theory there are things that are unchanging and form the basis for witnessing all the changes. Or consciousness remains separate from all that is perceived.

We see the changes in our body, in our thinking process and in our mental states of happiness and sorrow. All these changes are perceivable by something that is unchanging. While the changes are the effects the unchanging is either the cause or the witness.

We perceive changes in waking and dream states. The unchanging self that is experiencing all the changes is called the witness - Self (sakshi). But in the deep sleep state we don't perceive any change. So in that state, that unchanging reality remains only as a cause and the body is called the 'causal body'.

Our true nature is that unchanging Self. But out of ignorance, we associate ourselves with the changes and say to ourselves, 'I am old, I am happy, I am rich' etc.

Krishna, in the Bhagavad Gita, tells Arjuna, "It is I, seated in the hearts of all as their inner controller; and it is I who am the source of memory, knowledge and doubt. I am the only one worth knowing through the Vedas, I alone am the origin of the Vedas and the Vedantic tradition".

The consciousness is the ultimate cause and the ultimate unchanging reality. When Rontgen discovered X-rays, he had superimposed his memory, knowledge and doubt on consciousness to arrive at the right conclusion.

Vedanta is not concerned with the effects but is concerned with knowing about the unchanging cause behind all changes. That unchanging cause is called pure consciousness or God!

Adieu Rishi Kapoor!

Rishi Kapoor, the romantic actor of the Hindi film industry, passed into the mist of time this morning, a trifle after a quarter past 8. He was 67 and was battling leukemia for the last two years. His end had come about in a Bombay hospital.

He had done Mera Naam Joker - as the childhood version of Raj Kapoor in the film - and had just wrapped up the shooting of the evergreen love story, 'Bobby' when yours truly had joined as a first termer at the National Defence Academy. A month earlier, the filming of the famous camp scene - in which Narendra Chanchal had sung that song at the campfire - had taken place a few metres outside the Pashan Gate of the NDA. The movie was shown to the entire staff and cadets of the Academy, on release!

Rishi Kapoor is, thus, a contemporary. RIP friend! My tears and prayers. Here's wishing that his family has the strength to tide over these stressful times.

Adieu Irrfan Khan!

A beautiful note from Irrfan Khan, from London two years ago, after being diagnosed with colon cancer. His thoughts highlight his inner strength!

It's been quite some time now since I have been diagnosed with a high-grade neuroendocrine cancer. This new name in my vocabulary, I got to know, was rare and due to fewer study cases and less information comparatively, the unpredictability was more. I was part of a trial-and-error game.

I had been in a different game. I was travelling on a speedy train ride, had dreams, plans, aspirations, goals, was fully engaged in them. And suddenly someone taps on my shoulder and I turn to see. It's the TC : "Your destination is about to come. Please get down". I am confused : "No, no. My destination hasn't come". "No, this is it. This is how it is sometimes".

The suddenness made me realise how you are just a cork floating in the ocean with unpredictable currents! And you are desperately trying to control it.

In this chaos, shocked, afraid and in panic, while on one of the terrifying hospital visits, I blabber to my son, "The only thing I expect from me is not to face this crisis in this present state. I desperately need my feet. Fear and Panic should not overrule me and make me miserable".

That was my intention. And then pain hit. As if all this while, you were just getting to know pain and now you know his nature and his intensity. nothing was working; no consolation, no motivation. The entire cosmos becomes one at that moment - just pain and pain felt more enormous than God.

As I was entering the hospital, drained, exhausted, listless, I hardly realised my hospital was on the opposite side of Lord's, the stadium. The Mecca of my childhood dream. Amidst the pain, I saw a poster of a smiling Vivian Richards. Nothing happened, as if that world didn't ever belong to me.

This hospital also had a coma ward right above me. Once, while standing on the balcony of my hospital room, the peculiarity jolted me. Between the game of life and the game of death, there is just a road. On one side, a hospital, on the other, a stadium. As if one isn't part of anything which might claim certainty - neither the hospital nor the stadium. That hit me hard.

I was left with this immense effect of the enormous power and intelligence of the cosmos. The peculiarity of my hospital's location - it hit me. The only thing certain was the uncertainty. All I could do was to realise my strength and play my game better.

This realisation made me submit, surrender and trust, irrespective of the outcome, irrespective of where this takes me, eight months from now or four months from now or two years. The concerns took back seat and started to fade and kind of went out of my mindspace.

For the first time, I felt what 'freedom' truly means. It felt like an accomplishment. As if I was tasting life for the first time, the magical side of it. My confidence in the intelligence of the cosmos became absolute. I feel as if it has entered every cell of mine.

Time will tell if it stays but that is how I feel as of now.

Throughout my journey, people have been wishing me well, praying for me from all over the world. People I know, people I don't even know. They were praying from different places, different time zones and I feel all their prayers become one. One big force, like a force of current, which got inside me through the end of my spine and has germinated through the crown of my head.

It's germinating - sometimes a bud, a leaf, a twig, a shoot. I keep relishing and looking at it. Each flower, each twig, each leaf which has come from the cumulative prayers, each fills me with wonder, happiness and curiosity.

A realisation that the cork doesn't need to control the current. That you are being gently rocked in the cradle of nature.

My take.

A great actor and I've always liked watching his movies. RIP Irrfan! My tears and prayers for a stupendous actor. Here's wishing that your family has the strength to tide over these stressful times.

CDC adds additional symptoms to the COVID-19 list.

The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has added several new symptoms to its list for the corona virus : chills, muscle pain, headache, sore throat, repeated shaking with chills and a lost of taste or smell.

The new symptoms that join the existing list : fever, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty in breathing.

The expanded list could help those who are trying to identify whether they have symptoms related to COVID-19. With a limited number of test kits available, those who want to take a test must show symptoms first.

Several patients with the corona virus began reporting a loss of taste or smell last month, as well as muscle pain, chills and a headache.

The CDC website still says symptoms appear within 2 to 14 days of exposure to the virus. Importantly, the "emergency warning signs" for COVID-19 include trouble with breathing, persistent pain or pressure in the chest, bluish lips or face and confusion or not being able to rouse. People with these symptoms should seek medical attention right away, the CDC says.

"This list is not all inclusive", the CDC adds. "Please consult your medical cover provider for any other symptoms that are severe or concerning to you".

Also, older adults and those with other medical conditions, such as heart or lung disease, seem to be at a higher risk for having more serious complications from COVID-19, the CDC says. These people should take extra precautions and monitor their symptoms.

New symptoms may be added to the list as scientists learn more about the illness. People have also reported cases of digestive issues, such as diarrhea, according to USA Today.

Others have reported purple or blue lesions on their feet, most commonly in children and young adults, which are being called "COVID toes", the newspaper reported. There have also been reports of COVID patients getting pinkeye.

The virus could also trigger strokes in adults as a result of blood clotting issues, even in patients without a previous medical history and mild symptoms, tests have shown.

This is not to scare you but to help you have adequate knowledge about the pandemic, so that you can seek timely medical assistance in case you pick up any or a few of the symptoms!

Had got up at our usual time, the chores and was ready by a quarter past 9. There were drizzles in between and also, late in the evening.

Thiruvananthapuram, meanwhile, had experienced thundershowers for over an hour, this evening around 1700 hrs and during the bad weather, another huge branch of the same tree - that had damaged our Science Exploratory bus a week back - had fallen on to the Foundation's building. A full assessment of the extent of damages will be done tomorrow morning and I'm keeping my fingers (and toes too!) crossed.

The fifth columnists!

I am not as much scared of this pandemic as I am of certain people who seem to be very unhappy. With the way India is handling the crisis.......

India's success is an anathema for these prophets of doom......They are bitter, sulking, wishing and praying for this catastrophe to derail our great land.......

I try and analyse these people and their thought process.......I do not want to take any names but one common thread that seems to run through them is their visceral hatred for Modi.......

Their hatred for our Prime Minister is now translating into a hatred for India..........

They want people to suffer, to die, to wallow in despair and misery........They are more than willing to spread rumours and fake stories to create trouble..........It is almost as if India is fighting a battle on many fronts.....

These people are more than willing to tie up with our enemies across our borders to spread hatred and fake stories.........

But despite these merchants of gloom and darkness, India stands resolute........We who are the ordinary citizens of this great land, must note now and remember who stood with the nation in this great battle.......

When all this is over and peace comes back to our land, we must remember these protagonists of fake stories and make sure that they never again, can ply their trade......

Prime Ministers and parties will come and go.....But India is eternal........I have no other identity apart from being a citizen of this land.

.......We simply cannot condone any act which will weaken our resolve.......

The Lord Almighty in His abundant wisdom has decided to entrust Modi with the responsibilities of leading India through these crucial times........Never in the history of post independent India has a Prime Minister been confronted with such a challenge.......May the Lord Almighty guide him in the exercise of his duties so that we arrive at the promised shores, unscathed.........

I have the fullest of faith in the underlying strength of our nation......We shall win...., Together!

Arnab Goswami's Marathon Interrogation

Arnab Goswami has finally left the NM Joshi Police Station after a staggering over 12 hours of interrogation. Such a lengthy interrogation, sending away the two Congress workers who'd accosted him that fateful night on bail etc makes this case all the more interesting. Have the following observations :-

  (a) Was the lengthy interrogation - firstly, was it required - resorted to, for intimidating the
        journalist?
  (b) Wasn't it a vulgar display of misusing the law?
  (c) What sort of a weakling is Udhav Thackeray? Can he allow himself to be used in such a
        despicable fashion?
  (d) But then, he doesn't have any political alternative if he were to come out of the present
government? He has only himself to blame for getting cornered in this fashion.
  (e) What is Sharad Pawar up to? Hasn't he finished with his lowly politics even after being eaten
away by cancer? Why can't he do good things to the people at large, now that God and life are
defining the meaning of life to him?
  (f)  And Sonia Gandhi, each of your action is ringing the death knell of your party. Why don't you
answer for your lapses while running this country?

Sad! The law looks feeble and helpless among these thugs.

 9. The construction of the chariots for the 'Rath Yathra' begins on this day.

10.In the temple of Kshira-chora Gopinatha (Remuna, Orissa), the deities of Madana-mohana,
Govinda and Gopinatha are smeared with sandalwood pulp on this auspicious day.

A round up of sorts!

Today, I'm visiting a couple of news bytes that have clearly astounded me in the sheer manner of their happening, the double standards followed by certain people in their continuing endeavour to show Prime Minister Modi and his government's actions in bad light. The fact that amazes me is that instead of joining hands with the government, in these troubled times, they criticise each and every move of the government without giving an alternative - thereby, exposing their real intentions.

Are they in the mistaken idea of coming back to power, by putting obstacles, along with the section of media who seem to be their stooges?

 (a) Arnab Goswami And His Wife Targeted.

Arnab over the past week, has been highlighting the Palghar lynching of three people, out of
which two were Hindu monks. The incident took place on 16 Apr and to this date, none of the
three parties viz. the Shiv Sena, the NCP and the Congress who rule Maharashtra have uttered
a word against the gruesome incident (If it had been from the minorities, these parties would
have been the first to take off the blocks to highlight 'Hindu hot headedness') and Arnab has
gone hanger and tongs at Sonia Gandhi, to react to the incident.

Instead, a few goons of the Youth Congress had waylaid the journalist and his wife a few nights
back, to teach 'him a lesson'! His subsequent visit to the police station resulted in an FIR being
raised by the police - completely diluting the charges without a hint of the Youth Congress
workers being the culprits - that too, after a wait of 10 hrs! Serves Udhav Thackeray right for
wanting to come to power at any cost and is reduced to a puppet...wonder how he would face the
electorate, next, after all these lapses? The youth Congress workers from the states ruled by the
Congress had filed about 2,000 cases against the journalist in various courts across the country
and the usual sycophants celebrated the assault on the journalist through their twitter accounts
       giving away the party's involvement!

The final slap on the face of the Congress was given by the Supreme Court when it ordered
Arnab Goswami to continue with his work, assuring that there would be no interference!!

I like him because he's a spirited Bengali and a hard nosed journalist!

 (b) Mamata Banerjee's Antics.

Wonder what's wrong with this lady? Has she lost it as she seems to be fairly sure of losing the
Assembly elections, 10 months from now? Why is she not co-operating with the medical team
sent by the central government to take stock of the Covid situation in her state? She has given
a lot of concessions to the Muslim community during the lock down and it's estimated that the
actual situation on the ground regarding the number of cases on account of the illness, has been
       masked!

In other words, playing politics and trying to influence the vote bank for her benefit, for an
       activity, 10 months from now!!

A sorry state of affairs! Instead of standing together as one, during this grave crisis, guys are up to tricks to dilute the efforts of the government and thereby, put it in bad light to the rest of the world. And what amazes me is that there are a lot of people in the foreign media, trying to find faults with India's efforts, while closing their eyes on their own country's faults in dealing with the pandemic.

The ground truth (3).

Had said that I'd touch upon Covid related stories for a couple of days but since I've been able to get a few more interesting stories, have decided to extend  it by another day. Without much ado, here we go!

 (a) Kindness Begets Kindness.

A group of migrant workers from Bihar, MP and UP were quarantined in a primary school in
Palsana village in Sikar district, Rajasthan. When the Village Sarpanch went to meet them, they
pointed to the poor state of the school building and said if he could arrange paint and brushes,
they could spend their time well. In a week they changed the face of the school building which
had not been painted for years. When the Sarpanch wanted to pay them from the panchayat
funds, they politely declined and said, "We are getting free food, are being looked after by the
medical staff and so well by the villagers, what more do we need? We should also do something
       for the village".

True workers don't throw stones at doctors, spit on nurses, burn ambulances. They are true to
       their work.

 (b) Corona Diaries....

In a remote interior district of Thiruchirappally, Tamilnadu, a very poor pregnant lady, enduring
labour pains with great difficulty reaches the district hospital, 7 km away. The doctors said that
only 'C' section can be done and will require 1 unit of blood for the mother, but was unavailable
because of Covid-19 lock down. The husband steps in desperation to arrange for blood.

He is questioned by a police constable for breaking lock down rules.....After hearing the story,
the constable says.......I'm of the same blood group and agree to donate the blood.

The delivery takes place and both mother and the infant boy are safe and sound. The SP, after
hearing the story, rewards the constable Rs.1,000/-. DGP of Tamilnadu hears the story and gifts
       him Rs.10,000/-

The 23 year old constable, in turn, gifts the entire Rs.11,000/- to Sulochana, the mother, for the
       hospital bills......

       Salute Constable Syed Abu Thahir!

 (c)  Truly Inspiring.

India's First Lady, Mrs. Savita Kovind - wife of the Honourable President of India - is
stitching face masks at Shakti Haat for various shelter homes of New Delhi. I doff my hat for
        you, Ma'am!

And Today Was Zero Shadow Day.

        Madras             :               1207 hrs.
        Bangalore        :                1218 hrs.
        Mangalore       :                1225 hrs.

A zero shadow day is a day on which the Sun does not cast a shadow of an object at noon when the Sun is exactly at the "zenith". Shadows of straight objects like poles, bottles etc will disappear. They will appear surreal as if floating in air!

This happens twice a year for the people living between latitudes of 23.5 degrees N and 23.5 degrees S.

The ground truth (2).

More news about the Corona virus and connected stories from the world over. Without much ado, here I go.

 (a) No Use Of Rapid Test Kits For 48 hrs!

Amid complaints about faulty rapid test kits, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)
has advised states not to use them for the next two days. An advisory will be issued after their
teams carry out field trials. In Rajasthan, the Chinese-made rapid testing kits are not being used
because of inaccurate results. A team, set up for finding the accuracy of the Chinese kits has
concluded that only 5.4% tests were accurate.

Did the Chinese provide them free or did we buy them?

 (b) WHO Warns Against Easing Curbs!

The World Health Organisation has warned that rushing to ease the Corona virus restrictions
could lead to a resurgence of the illness when governments the world over, are grappling with
the toss up between being people-centric and economy-centric!

 (c) No Home Visits, Says Barbers' Association!

The barber shops in the state will open only after the lock down is lifted according to their
governing Association. The locks of my hair - though not too much, I must admit - have grown
longer and the ones that hang over my ears are a constant source of irritation. Luckily, Sajish,
the young man who looks after me at the Amigos told me that he'd visit my house one of these
       days, to spruce me up.

I'd called him up to find out as to how he has been doing during the lock down.

 (d) The KSEB Faces A Problem Of Plenty!

The power consumption is at its lowest, compared to peak summer days in the previous years,
due to lock down. Now the consumption is 70 MLD (Million litres per day) whereas the normal
consumption during summer in the previous years was 85 MLD. Average water level in the
major dams in the state is around 44% of the capacity. If the KSEB is unable to increase the
production and decrease average water levels to 15 to 18% by June when rain starts, it can
       possibly lead to floods!

The KSEB plans to bring down water levels in two phases ending on 31 May and 15 Jul.

 (e)  52,000 kg COVID-19 Waste Treated So Far In Kerala!

The state has only one biomedical treatment facility in the state, Indian Medical Association
Goes Eco-friendly (IMAGE) and it functions in Palakkad - it has been handling the hospital
biowaste generated during the diagnostics and treatment of suspected and confirmed Covid-19
        patients.

        Interesting statistics.

            (i) Total collection centres in the state                 61.
(ii) The percentage of PPE waste                          75%.

Got up at our usual time, the chores and was ready half an hour late. Suma had gone off earlier than usual as she had to collect her free ration kit of 25 kg of rice. Another hot day....

The ground truth!

For the next couple of days, I intend covering some real life experiences during the battle with the Corona virus. And I can assure you, you can identify heroes and heroines at every point. These have been compiled with inputs from various sources. So without much ado, here we go.

 (a) The Health Care Workers in PPE.

Battling COVID-19 from the forefront is taking a physical toll, apart from the mental pressure,
on resident doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers in hospitals. Six to eight hours in multi-
layered clothing in non-air conditioned rooms full of Covid patients - sometimes high risk ones -
and the humid weather making it worse, as one can't wipe off one's sweat; it can be daunting and
draws hugely on the endurance factor. One cannot eat or drink in fear of contamination and even
if one were to be thirsty, one may have to go without water to reduce the urge to urinate!

In a few non-high-risk wards, the shift goes on for 12 hrs. With canteens having restricted
access or remaining shut, getting healthy meals is a luxury.

And we thought that everyone in Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) was safe!

 (b) The Kerala Police And The Migrant Labour.

Perumbavoor, a small town 50 km south of Kochi, hosts 1.2 lakh migrant workers in 1,675
camps. While refraining from the use of brute force, the police has relied on intelligence
operations and soft power to keep the largely volatile population under check. The following are
       discernible :-

           (i) They are content with the facilities provided.
(ii) The trouble makers, among the community, who were spreading fake news have been
                weeded out.
(iii) The police have been able to penetrate the numerous What'sApp groups and pull off
                their intelligence operations.
(iv) Through well wishers, television sets and cable network have been arranged. They, thus,
get real time news from the other parts of the country and their hometowns.
          (v) The camps have been reduced to small groups and ideas collected so that food of their
                choice is prepared

  (c) An Example Set.

Two brothers in Karnataka's Kolar, Tajamul Pasha and Muzamil Pasha, sold their land and
raised Rs.25 lakhs from it to help the needy amid the lock down. Besides distributing ration
packets containing essentials, the two brothers have also set up a community kitchen for those
who can't cook at home. So, far they have delivered free grocery to over 2,800 families.

  (d) Indarmy Rescues SDM, Karnah at Sadhna.

Chowkibal - Tangdhar Road which is the only axis connecting the people of Tangdhar to the
world is spotted with avalanche prone stretches all along the route. This afternoon, at 1400 hrs,
SDM, Karnah and his driver, PSO were trapped in a massive avalanche at Sadhna pass. Indian
Army's Avalanche Rescue Team at Sadhna pass, supported by troops deployed around sprang
into action and dug out the buried vehicle from a huge mass of snow. The team, after having
dug its way through to the bottom of the snow pile, broke the vehicle's windshield to rescue all
the trapped individuals. As per eye witnesses around, the avalanche was just short of rolling the          vehicle down the cliff.

The buried team was immediately accorded first aid and later stabilised at Sadhna's medical
        inspection room.

   (e) In Gratitude.

And this is from New York. Dr Uma Madhusudana from Mysore - had done her MBBS from
Mysore Medical College. She is working in the New York Hospital treating Covid 19 patients.
        Has reportedly saved many lives.

More than 200 cars with recovered patients, relatives and police passed in front of her house to
express their gratitude. It was a great sight, they say!

Had got up at our usual time, the chores and was ready by a half past 9. Suma left by about 1800 hrs
on completion of work. Another warm day!

A few interesting ones!

How Things Change

India seems to have sacrificed its economy to save lives. The US seems to have sacrificed lives to save the economy. That's strange because we have always been told that human life is cheap in India and so precious in the US!

How Casual Leave Came To Be Considered As Temporary Duty

During the II World War, in 1940, when the Blitzkrieg was at the peak and the Battle of Britain was on, a British Air Defence Gunner, on duty in Southern England, near Dover, requested for casual leave, to attend to his ailing mother staying alone in a suburb of London. The casual leave was sanctioned under very special compassionate reasons.

The soldier went home but while attending his mother, he realised there was a heavy bombing raid over London and the AD guns in their county, deployed very near his house, were silent. He realised that the crew of that gun  were severely injured, rendering that gun inactive. This AD Gunner left his mother and went to the gun, manned it and with the other injured detachment member, managed to shoot down a German aircraft.

The CO of that AD Regiment recommended his detachment for a gallantry award, perhaps an MC, but while the others' recommendation was accepted, it was rejected for this Gunner from a different Regiment because he was on leave and not on duty. However, the CO insisted that the matter be dealt with at the War Office level again.

When Sir Winston Churchill, the then PM, heard of this, he straight away approved the MC, on the plea that this Gunner was on casual leave but disregarded his domestic commitment, voluntarily joined an operational Detachment and managed to thwart the German air offensive; thus this act of his deserved the MC. Churchill declared that henceforth all casual leave will be considered as temporary duty, thus qualifying military personnel to be eligible for awards.

Corporate Hospitals

Corporate hospitals face bankruptcy in India. They have invested millions in costly equipment, hired high salary experts and gone in for huge infrastructure. This was being maintained by unnecessary tests, diagnoses, admissions, surgeries and inflated bills around the clock. The lock down has cut down on all that and footfall is near zero. These establishments are no longer in a position to pay installments and salaries. Earnings are a pittance.

They have appealed to the government for a bailout. As a result of the lock down many unnecessary prescriptions, diagnostic tests, admissions and surgeries did not happen.

"Immunizations" did not happen. As a result real life emergencies have decreased drastically. It is being discussed that both infant mortality and general mortality have reduced. All should take note. Ethical doctors are very happy and many want these establishments to shut down permanently. But beware when the lock down is lifted. They will try to make up by redoubling their efforts.

Stay away. Visit government hospitals. Visit your local doctor. Visit ayurvaids, homeopaths and naturopaths. The current epidemic has signaled you MUST take care of your health to survive. All other options have closed. If you stay healthy, you survive. Learn about body types, food, diet, nutrition, natural remedies, yoga, meditation and follow a routine. Give up addictions. Give up health destroying habits. Reduce fat. Make your body lean and alkaline.

Detoxify. Health and immunity have, at last, emerged winners.

Got up at our usual time. Suma had called up saying that she wouldn't be coming in today as their water motor had gone kaput and that she'd have to carry water from far, for domestic consumption. It was, therefore, Lekha's efforts all the way.

It rained around a half past 9 in the evening, albeit, for a short while!

We are not in the same boat.....

I heard that we are in the same boat. But it's not like that. We are in the same storm but not in the same boat. Your ship can be shipwrecked and mine might not be. Or vice versa.

For some, quarantine is optimal : moment of reflection, of re-connection. Easy, in flip flops with a whiskey or tea.

For others, this is a desperate crisis.

For some others it is facing loneliness.

For some, a peace, rest time, vacation.

Yet for others, torture : How am I going to pay my bills?

Some were concerned about a brand of chocolate for Easter (this year there were no rich chocolates).

Some were in their "home office".

Others are looking through trash to survive.

Some want to go back to work because they are running out of money.

Others want to kill those who break the quarantine.

Some need to break the quarantine to stand in line at the banks.

Others to escape.

Others criticise the government for lines.

Some have experienced the near death of the virus, some have already lost someone from it, some are not sure their loved ones are going to make it and some don't even believe this is a big deal.

Some of us who are well now may end up experiencing it and some believe they are infallible and will be blown away if or when this hits someone they know.

Some have faith in God and expect miracles during 2020.

Others say the worse is yet to come.

So, friends, we are not in the same boat. We are going through a time when our perceptions and needs are completely different.

And each one will emerge, in his own way, from that storm.

Some with a tan from their pool. Others with scars on their soul (for invisible reasons).

It is very important to see beyond what is seen at first glance. Not just looking, more than looking, seeing.

See beyond the political party, beyond religion, beyond the nose on your face.

Do not underestimate the pain of others if you do not feel it.

Do not judge the good life of the other, do not condemn the bad life of the other. Don't be a judge. Let us not judge the one who lacks as well as the one who exceeds him.

We are on different ships, looking to survive.

Let everyone navigate their route with respect, empathy and responsibility.

I'm putting down two stories for your consumption and analysis, so that you come to your own conclusions!

 Story 1.

Dr. Simon, 52, Neurosurgeon, MD of New Hope Hospital, PH Road who was undergoing treatment   for COVID at Apollo, Vanagaram has passed into the mist of time.

Dr. Simon was unknowingly treating Dr. Maraicayar who attended the Tablighi Jama'at in New   Delhi. Dr. Maraicayar did not reveal to him the fact. After two days, Dr. Simon fell sick, self   medicated himself. But after a week he became bad and got admitted to Apollo. In the meantime,
Dr. Maraicayar fell sick and admitted himself in the General Hospital and was tested positive for
 COVID.

Then the government traced his contacts and identified Dr. Simon in Apollo. By then, his condition
had become very bad and he succumbed.

RIP Dr. Simon. You've paid with your life for someone else's folly.

The saddest part is that no media channel is covering the news!

 Story 2.

Two sadhus and their driver were on their way to Surat to attend a funeral. Between 2130 and 2200
hrs on 16 Apr, their vehicle was stopped by a mob and the three of them were lynched to death after
being hit with sticks. The sad part to this story, that happened in the Palghar district of Maharashtra,
 has three aspects :-

      (a) The murder of the three persons took place in the presence of a police team. There was a
failed attempt to hide the fact that the two murdered were sadhus.
      (b) The case has been registered today because of intense pressure by the local BJP guys.
      (c) Again, most of the media has blanked out this story!

Had got up at our usual time, the chores and was ready about half an hour late. On hearing that the
restrictions were gonna be eased, we could hear the noise of traffic after what seemed to be ages but by evening, the Kerala government had clarified quite a few points.

PS.
The chief minister, in his evening press meeting when asked about the 'Sprinklr Scam' said that he has nothing to say about it and was waiting for concrete evidence. Sadly, by doing so, he has let down his IT Secretary!

News views!

1. The Anaconda Is Here!

The Anaconda is here, courtesy the Indian Railways! It's the latest initiative.

It is a combination of 3 goods trains, linked one after another, 2 km long with 177 wagons, 3
engines and 3 brake vans. The lead engine in the front, controls the other two engines using a
technology involving radio waves.....no cables are involved. Its average speed is 80 kmph.

The railways is using the Anacondas for quick transfer of essentials during the lock down.

May the Indian Railways come out with more innovations to serve the people!

2. The Latest Controversies In Kerala!

The Kerala government's decision to utilise the services of the US company Sprinklr Inc to
analyse the state's public health data has roiled into a huge political controversy. The IT firm,
Exalogic Solutions owned by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's daughter and based at Bangalore,
had been connected with the formalising of the deal. But ever since the data controversy has
broken out, Exalogic Solutions' website has been withdrawn and the Sprinklr India website has
    been masked!

To make matters worse, the state's IT Secretary has gone public on a Malayalam news channel
that the advice of the government's legal department - a must in such policy decisions - was not
taken as he was 'convinced' that the deal was perfect! Shorn of all niceties, the IT Secretary has
taken the entire blame on himself! To save whom, is the moot question!!

The chief minister's first reaction is that he treats this allegation with the 'contempt that it
deserves'. He has gone on further to say that the opposition, UDF, was jealous with the wide
acceptance of his government's actions on the Corona virus pandemic! The CPM and a few of
the ministers have taken on 'explaining to the people' on similar lines. The government has also
made a statement that it will cancel the agreement!! (The government's spokespersons have also
claimed that the chief minister's hour long evening press briefings have high TRPs and that, this,
too has riled the opposition!!!). As a mute spectator, one can only laugh at all these claims.

As the above controversy has been raging, today the Pinarayi Vijayan government has got into
another muddle by appointing a recently retired judge as the Chairman, Kerala Real Estate
Appellate Tribunal. The judge had retired in Sep '19 and is known to have given the judgement
favourable to the chief minister by delinking his involvement, as the state's power minister, in
2017 while going ahead with the remainder of the infamous SNC Lavalin Case!

See the paradox. Sitaram Yechury and the CPM have been bad mouthing Prime Minister Narendra
Modi on having the former CJI, Mr. Ranjan Gogoi nominated as a member of the Rajya Sabha!

The coming days are gonna be interesting for us, common citizens, to hear the politicians'
arguments and counterarguments on the issues. They have a poor opinion of our memory as well
    as our intelligence!

Think positive!

1. Projection

Switzerland's iconic Matterhorn mountain was illuminated with the Indian flag "to express
solidarity and give hope and strength to all Indians". "The world is fighting COVID-19
together. Humanity will surely overcome this pandemic", Prime Minister Narendra Modi
responded to the gesture. The flags of the US, Italy, Japan and Germany were also beamed
    on to the mountain.

  *                   *                    *

2. The Vision

Florence Nightingale had said in 1870, "It will take 150 years for the world to see the kind of
   nursing I envision......"

And to jog your memory :-
                                                   1870
                                                   +150
                                                 ---------
                                                   2020!

3. If The Experts Were To Be Believed.

Experts are predicting a huge downfall of Economy due to the Corona. I do not know much about
these experts. But I know for sure that they do not know anything about the value of human
    motivation and determined efforts.

If experts were to be believed, after the total destruction in the II World War, Japan had no future.
But the same Japan in just three decades or so, made the US cry at the market place.

If the experts were to be believed, Israel should have been wiped out from the world map by the
Arabs but the fact is different.

As per the rules of Aerodynamics, the Bumble Bee can not fly. But it flies because it does not
    know the rules of Aerodynamics.

If the experts were to be believed, we should have been no where in the '83 Cricket World Cup.

If the experts were to be believed, Wilma Rudolf, the first American lady to win 4 Olympic Golds
in Athletics, should not have been in a position to walk without braces, no question of running.

If the experts were to be believed Arunima Sinha can hardly lead a normal life. But she climbed
    the Mount Everest.

The corona crisis is no different. I do not have any doubt that, we will defeat the Corona hands
down and the Indian Economy will bounce back in a great manner.

    - Ratan Tata.

4. A Nationalistic Decision.

A few days back, came the depressing news that China's central bank had bought 1% stake in the
HDFC Bank. Today, came the Indian government's bold decision, amid fears of take over of Indian
firms during the Corona uncertainty by other countries, especially China.

By this law, such take overs can only be approved by the union government. As we say in the
Navy, Bravo Zulu to the Prime Minister and his team!

From far and near.......(2).

1. Today Is Charlie Chaplin's 132nd Birthday

Charlie Chaplin told the audience a wonderful joke and all the people started laughing....Charlie repeated the same joke and only a few people laughed.....? He again repeated the same joke but this time no one laughed.......? Then he said these beautiful lines......

"When you cannot laugh on the same joke again and again.......then why do you cry again and
     again on the same worry?"

So enjoy every moment of life....! Life is beautiful!!

Today is Charlie Chaplin's 132nd birthday - a good day to recollect his three touching statements :-

    (a) Nothing is permanent in this world, not even our troubles.
    (b) I like walking in the rain because nobody can see my tears.
    (c) The most wasted day in life is the day in which we have not laughed.

Keep smiling!

2. The Ongoing Actions In Jammu and Kashmir

 (a) 500,000 Hindu - Sikh families have become domiciles of Jammu and Kashmir.
 (b) All perks/facilities withdrawn from Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti.
 (c) Kashmir administration loses control over all universities including Jammu and Kashmir
       National Law University.
 (d) Kashmir administration loses control over Hindu shrines.
 (e) Competent authority empowered to take suo motu notice and evict encroachers from properties,
Hindus left behind in Kashmir in 1990.
 (f)  Kashmir administration loses control over all Golf and other clubs in Jammu and Kashmir.
 (g) The role of Kashmir Chief Minister in university affairs reduced to zero.
 (h) Legal protection granted to anti-nationals in Jammu and Kashmir, 42 years ago, revoked.
 (j)  Now, those facing Public Safety Act, 1978 can be put in any jail outside Jammu and Kashmir.
 (k) No move of the Secretariat from Jammu to Kashmir. In other words, the Secretariat will continue
       to function from Jammu.

Note. From What'sApp.

3. Why Are These Incidents Recurring?

Yesterday, it was in Moradabad and today, in Bareilly. The Police and the COVID - 19 workers were attacked by mobs. It's the anti-nationals who are desperately trying to show that Prime Minister Modi's decision to extend the lock down till 03 May is not correct.

The police and the health workers confirm that the attack on them, at Moradabad yesterday was a planned one. The women who were at the roof tops and balconies had an ample stock of stones that were pelted at them.

Why are we shying away from taking action against them? They need to be rounded up for the law to take over and suitable punishment meted out to each of the culprits, at the earliest.

A mix of stories from far and near.

Happy Birthday Indian Railways!

At 1535 hrs on 16 Apr 1853, the first train in India left Bori Bunder, in Bombay, for its destination,
Thane, 34 km away. It has been 167 years, going strong and it's the world's largest government enterprise! Ever since the largesse during the annual railway budgets have been stopped, after Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister, the Railways have taken off on a profit making graph! The stress on modernisation and efficiency have drastically reduced the frequency of accidents and the behemoth that the Railway Board was, has been pruned!

21 Million Chinese Died of Covid : US Intelligence

A new data intercepted by the United States reveals that 21 million people died in China from Dec '19 to Mar '20, US intelligence officials conclude in a classified report for the Trump administration.
The Intelligence report stated that at least 20.9 million of the deaths were linked to corona virus.

According to the US, the intercepted data that shows that China under reported its corona virus infections and deaths was validated for a second time when it tallied with a data released by Beijing authorities. Beijing announced on 19 Mar that over 21 million cell phone accounts were cancelled in the past three months while 840,000 landlines were closed.

China had reported little over 81,000 infections with 3,300 deaths.

Cellphones are an indispensable part of life in China and it's only closed when the user is dead.

A Belated Vishukkaineettam

Ramakrishnan, the newspaper boy, was given the Vishukkaineettam today. On the day of Vishu, I didn't have the change and yesterday there were no newspapers. The moment I'd called out for him, he'd unfolded his saffron lungi - which he folds while riding his bicycle - reminding me that he was expecting this occasion and he would have been thoroughly disappointed if I hadn't. Thank God, I was able to do it and felt damn nice.

Spring Cleaning

Pushpaakaran, the farmhand, rang the door bell promptly at 0800 hrs this morning to do spring cleaning of The Quarterdeck. We get it done twice a year and he told me that he looks forward to those two days, every year. As usual, he'd started from the terrace, downward. By 1600 hrs, he'd finished the job with the ceiling fans and other fixtures gleaming. He'd also cleared the kitchen soak pit and snipped off the dried up beanstalk.

Another interesting perspective!

The lock down began in our country from 25 Mar at midnight.........and now extended till 03 May.

It would be exactly 40 days from 25 Mar to 03 May.....

Something is strangely biblical......

                                   QUARANTINE

The Latin root of the word "quarantine" is "forty".
So what does the Bible say about 40?
The flood lasted 40 days.
40 days Moses stayed on Mt Sinai to receive the Commandments.
Exodus lasted 40 years.

Jesus fasted for 40 days.
Lent is 40 days.
40 days for a woman to rest after giving birth.

A group of theologians thinks the number 40 represents "change". It is the time of preparing a person or people to make a fundamental change.

Something will happen after these 40 days. Just believe and pray. Remember, whenever the number 40 appears in the Bible, there is a "change".

Please know that during this "quarantine" rivers are clearing up, vegetation is growing, the air is becoming cleaner because of less pollution, there is less theft and murder, health is happening and most importantly, people are turning to Christ. The Earth is at rest for the first time in many years and hearts are truly transforming.

So, during this time, enjoy it with your loved ones and return to the family altar together. Family prayer is a great blessing. Through prayer you will see the changes God can work in you and in your home.

Christ promises us that everything works together for the good for those who love God : Romans 8:28!

Remember we are in the year 2020 and 20+20 = 40.

Also, Jesus Christ, the saviour of the world, was born during a census. (And it's the year of the US Census and also, the NPR in India).

Lastly, 2020 is perfect vision. May our sight focus on the Lord and live according to His perfect vision for us, knowing, He holds us in the palm of His hand.

May these days of "quarantine" bring spiritual liberation to our souls, our nation and our world.

The best is yet to come.

Trust in the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit!

     time.

 5. Economic losses are nothing as compared to saving the lives of Indians.

     efforts.

 7. Lock down extended till 03 May 2020.

 8. We must follow all the restrictions.

 9. Any positive case and death will be a severe failure of our efforts.

10. Analysis till 20 Apr to evaluate efforts in regions in terms of following the restrictions. Areas
may be considered for free movement under restrictions.

11. No flaws nor let others do it.

12. The concerns of the poor are being addressed.

13. Detailed guidelines will be published on 15 Apr 2020.

14. We have sufficient stocks and facilities.

15. More than 1 lakh bed facilities made available.

17. Seven appeals :-

      (a) Take care of elderly people.
      (b) Follow lock down and social distancing norms.
      (c) Follow guidelines issued by the government.
      (d) Use 'Arogyasetu' app.
      (e) Help poor people.
      (f)  Be compassionate.
      (g) Thank and honour the service providers.

........and the aftermath!

Within a matter of a couple of hours after the PM's address, thousands of migrant workers assembled at the Bandra railway station saying that they wanted to go back home. They were cane charged by the police and told that they would be looked after, in the clusters that they are made to stay with timely meals assured, as was happening thus far! They have been told that they would get the chance to return to their homes once the lock down was shifted.

A similar incident had taken place in Surat, too.

The question that arose was as to what was the provocation that led to the migrant labourers to defy the lock down, all of a sudden. Who provoked them? Some actions on the part of a few politicians from the opposition are worth a detailed analysis for triggering anti-national activities:-

       (a) Sonia Gandhi cites the Surat, Bandra incidents to show that people are revolting against
             the lock down.
       (b) Sanjay Jha, Raj Babbar echo similar sentiments.
       (c) They seem to be happy that things are going wrong!

I say that there has been a sabotage if the following are considered :-

       (a) None of the migrant workers, who'd come out, were carrying any bag or personal effects.
If they were really hell bent on going back, they should have been carrying them.
       (b) There were hardly any women or children in the crowd.
       (c) How did so many gather at the railway station when there were no trains?
       (d) How come the police did not observe the people moving?
       (e) Why were political speeches permitted?
       (f) Why was the assembly point near the Masjid and the rapidity was too good to believe.

It was mischief in food distribution that triggered an unwanted crisis!

Shouldn't these people be rounded up and tried for anti-national activities by fomenting trouble, by their utterances, during this difficult period?

It's Baisakhi!

While the Sikhs celebrate Vaisakhi (Baisakhi) across India; rest of India wonders if it is about doing Bhangra and dancing.

No, it is not; Baisakhi holds a lesson for all Indians.......especially in this day and age.....

So this day in 1699, in a congregation of people from all across India .....standing there listening to their Guru, Sree Gobind Rai asked for human sacrifice of five men one after the other. Five men from different castes from different parts of India stood up from the crowd of thousands.

      * A shopkeeper (Baniya) called Daya Ram from Lahore.
      * A farmer (Jat) called Dharam Das from Meerut.
      * A so-called low-caste water carrier called Himmat Rai from Jagannath Puri, Orissa.
      * A tailor (of Cheemba caste) called Mukham Chand from Dwarka, Gujarat.
      * A barber (of Naai caste) called Sahib Chand from Bidar, Karnataka.

With his choice of disciples from the five different corners of India, Gobind Rai ji visualised the national dream.....from the coast of Gujarat along the Arabian Sea to the coast of Orissa along the Bay of Bengal; from the great plains of the Punjab to the Gangetic Plain and then, onto the Deccan peninsula, covering Karnataka.

Do not forget that at that time, all these were separate kingdoms; it was Sree Gobind Rai ji that thought all of them as one......this Baisakhi day of 1699!

With the choice of disciples from five different caste-groups, he visualised an integrated classless society. The five were christened as the First Five Khalsa Sikhs (The Panch Piare) and the five, in turn, christened their Guru as the sixth. Gobind Rai was now Gobind Singh ji. All caste names and surnames were dropped and a common surname was proposed for all Indians across India; a surname that denoted a casteless, classless creed of men willing to sacrifice themselves for the nation and against injustice.

And the 'swaroop' he chose for the classless people was an amalgamation of the ancient Indian thought of Rishis (as mentioned by Guru Gobind Singh ji in the Sarbloh Granth) and the kshatriya tradition of warriors, hence the 'jooda', the hair and the 'talwar'. The concept of 'Miri-Piri' was coded in the dress system of this new society envisioned by him - a group of people who were strong in Miri (Physical strength and material possessions) and Piri (Spiritual strength and humility).

So, the five so called lower castes were given the temporal strength of a 'Rishi' (a Brahmin citadel till then) and the physical responsibilities of a Kshatriya (a duty till then limited to the Rajputs). This motley group of people uprooted Afghan and Mughal rule from entire north India from the Yamuna to the Khyber pass, such was the power of this vision.

And this was the India that he envisioned from the five corners of his nation. Guru Gobind Singh ji was a visionary par excellence. His vision has been diluted and limited to Sikhism. Khalsa is a state of mind, not just a religion!

Happy Baisakhi!

A nice story!

This experience was posted to me by my course mate, Tipsy Gill and I thought I must share it with all of you because it's, indeed, a nice story!

Last November, I was driving back to Dehradun from Chandigarh - a fascinating four-hour journey, with the added attraction of visiting Paonta Sahib Gurdwara. I had to break on the way to give myself and my car some rest. And what better than entering the abode of the Guru.

Besides the soothing kirtan, it is the langar that one savours, seated on the floor among a multitude of people from all walks of life. Some partake all meals as they have no other means to satiate their hunger. Breaking bread with them gives an indescribable spiritual high and to experience this, one doesn't have to belong to any religion.

I, too, enjoyed the langar and came out to get on with my journey. I stopped to buy some knick knacks from a kiosk outside the gurdwara. Just then I spotted a family of Gujjars in an intent discussion in front of a tea vendor. The family comprised an elderly couple, two middle-aged couples and four children. Three women were partially veiled. They seemed poor as the eldest gentleman(probably the father) counted coins and some crumpled notes. Undoubtedly, the issue was how much they could afford to buy.

They asked for three cups of tea and four samosas. Gathering courage, I asked him, "Kya aap sab khana khayenge?" There was silence. Sometimes, silence can be loud. The innocent eyes of the kids were filled with hope. "Hum kha ke aaye hain", he responded. There was an instant retort, "Kahan khaaya hai subah se kuchh bhi, Abba?" Hearing that a dull ache in my chest caught me by surprise. The stern look in the eyes of the three men and the pleading moist eyes of the women said it all. I insisted that they came with me. They agreed, reluctantly.

We entered the gurdwara. A good feeling descended over me as I deposited their shoes at the 'jora ghar'. The elders were awed by the architectural marvel. However, there was fear in their eyes, which was understandable. They were entering a non-Islamic place of worship for the first time. But the children couldn't care less, their innocent faces single mindedly focused on food. Some onlookers flashed strange looks from the corner of their eyes. But then I followed the children, adopting their easy attitude as they excitedly chose head wraps of different colours.

Except for the eldest member, all accompanied me inside and emulating me, bowed their heads and touched their forehead to the floor. Many others must have noticed, as I did, that these children went through this ritual with utmost reverence. They took 'parshad' from the Bhaiji who asked them if they needed more. The children gladly nodded.

We entered the 'langar hall' and I took the kids along to collect the 'thaalis'. They did it with joy, like only kids would. Seated opposite us was a newly married couple. The bride, with red bangles accentuating her charm, asked the children to sit beside her and two of them sat between them. The way she was looking after them, I could tell that she would make a loving mother. 'Langar' was served  and though I had already eaten, I ate a little to make my guests comfortable. One had to see to believe how they relished it. The initial apprehension had vanished and they ate to their fill. I have no words to describe the joy I experienced. The only thing I recall is that my heart was pounding against my rib cage.

We had nearly finished when an elderly Sikh and a youth with flowing beard (Perhaps the head granthi and sewadar) sought me out. I was overcome by fear and more than me, my guests were scared. I walked up to them with folded hands. He inquired, "Inhaan nu tusi le ke aaye ho? (Have you brought them in?)" I nodded. The next question had me baffled, "Tusi har din path karde ho? (Do you read the scripture everyday?)". I almost blurted out "yes", but it would have been a lie. So, with utmost humility I said "no".

Expecting an admonition, he surprised me, "Tuhaanu tha koi lorh hi nahin. Aj tuhanuu sab kuch mil gaya hai ji (You don't need to. Today you have got everything)". I was flabbergasted. Was it advice or sarcasm?

He added, "Inha nu Babbe de ghar lya ke te langar khva ke tusi sab kuch paa liya. Tuhaada dhanwad. Assi dhan ho gaye (By bringing them to the Guru's abode for langar, you've got everything from God. Thank you. We are blessed)". Then with folded hands, he walked up to the elderly couple and requested them, "Aap jad bhi idhar aao to langar kha ke jaaiye. Yeh to uparwale da diya hai ji (Whenever you happen to pass through here, please come and have food. It is God's gift)".

I escorted my guests out of the langar hall. Just as we were about to pick our footwear, one of the children said, "Humme aur halwa do naa". The five of us went in to get more parshad. Finally, as they were about to depart, the elderly lady whispered to her husband. I inquired, "Koi baat, Miyaji?"

Almost pleading, he said, "Yeh kah rahin ki, kya aap ke sar par haath rakh sakti hain?" I bowed as she blessed me with tears in her eyes. A wave of emotions swept over me.

Is it my imagination or for real that I often feel the beautiful hand of a Muslim lady, wrapped in purity and love, on my head?

A few interesting tidbits!

Some interesting tidbits about Delhi. Let's take the origin of the names of Delhi's markets.

 (a) INA Market. Is not named after the Indian National Army. It's actually named after a private
airline, the Indian National Airways, that was later nationalised and became part of the Indian
       Airlines.
 (b) Khan Market. Is named after Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan's brother, Khan Abdul Jabbar Khan.
Ghaffar market is the one named after the Frontier Gandhi.
 (c) Bengali Market. Is named after Lala Bengali Mal Lohia who built the place and had no
       connection with Bengal or Bengalis.
 (d) Mehrchand Market and Khanna Market. Separated by a few hundred yards, are named after
one person : Mehrchand Khanna, who was rehabilitation minister after independence.
 (e) GB Road. Isn't Gandhi Baba Road. Named after a British officer Garstin Bastion.

 Other interesting information.

 * What's more, the famous Pandara Road was actually Pandava Road. It was a clerk misreading
while copying it that led to the current name.
 * Rai Sina village and surrounding areas were cleared to make way for Viceroy House. The villages
were resettled under the Deputy Commissioner, Mr. Young. The name of the new colony?
    Youngpura ----today's Jungpura.

April is the Month of the Military Child.......

The official flower of the Military child is the Dandelion. Why? The plant puts
down roots almost anywhere and it's almost impossible to destroy. It's an
unpretentious plant yet good looking. It's a survivor in a broad image of climates.
Military children bloom everywhere the winds carry them. They are hardy and
upright. Their roots are strong, cultivated deeply in the culture of the military,
planted swiftly and surely. They're ready to fly in the breezes that take them to new
adventures, new lands and new friends.

Experts say that military children are well-rounded, culturally aware, tolerant and
extremely resilient. Military children have learned from an early age that home is
where their hearts are, that a good friend can be found in every corner of the world
and in every colour and that education doesn't only come from school. They live
history. They learn that to survive means to adapt, that the door that closes one chapter of their life opens up to a new and exciting adventure full of new friends and new experiences.

The fortnight that was!

A fortnight has passed since the clamping of the lock down pan India. Despite the initial doubts as to how an effective lock down - keeping the people of India within the confines of their homes - could ever be successfully enforced, we went about it in a very positive way.

Let me go through some of  my personal experiences, the sights that I saw and the stories that I heard to understand how the days had passed!

      *                       *                         *

Our Chevy that was badly mauled by an auto rickshaw followed by a tourist taxi the next day, was handed over to the service station to effect immediate repairs the day after our arrival from Kochi. The heart sinking sight of the badly mauled vehicle was too much for me! But about three days into the repairs, the lock down had been put in place and the car is now parked in the shop floor of the service station. A spare is yet to arrive from Pune and I suppose, the readied car will be available to me only a week after the lifting of the lock down.

       *                        *                         *

My neighbour wanted to terminate the daily drop of his newspapers, as he was cautioned by a friend of his, that the  newspapers carry a lot of contamination while being handled at the last-point distribution area from where the newspaper boys collect their share. However much I tried to tell him that the newspaper boy would lose his commission, he would hear nothing of it and I'd to do the dirty job of telling Ramakrishnan who wondered aloud as to why they were doing it and gave me a knowing smile as he caught on. Two days later, our neighbour took back his words after his daughter had spoken to him....he, now collects the newspapers!

If the story were to be believed, Ramakrishnan would have contracted the Corona virus by now. So much about rumour and fear mongering!

       *                         *                          *

We'd, in the meanwhile, got two new maids - Suma and Jaya - to assist Lekha with the household chores. While Jaya had told Lekha that she would resume work after the lock down was lifted, Suma had pleaded to allow her to come for work everyday. She had the following reasons:-

     (a) Her daughter's marriage is scheduled in September. She's collecting money to pay off the
          debts.
     (b) A hard worker, she hates sitting idle at home. Moreover she, has her sister-in-law to help at
           home.
     (c) She says that she can't take wages without working - such people are turning out to be rare.

For Lekha, her coming for work everyday is a great boon and she stays pretty close to us. It definitely is a matter of taking risks but we hope that the three of us will not contract any illness.

      *                          *                           *

Meanwhile, the Foundation was able to put in its mite to help about 250 migrant labourers with shelter and food through fast action and contacting, as well as cajoling, people in the corridors of power. Also the NGO, that I'm part of, has been distributing masks made in a few of our production units by the women-self-help groups, under guidance by the health authorities and the police. The masks and hand washing disinfectants are being provided to the people at ration shops and market places where bunching is a possibility. A grocery kit of rice, pulses and essential items have also been distributed to the poor

      *                          *                           *

And in nearby circles here in Thrissur, a story has been in circulation that a guy - a hideous one at that - is on the prowl at nights, generally frightening people at random. The police are on the look out for the mischief maker.

       *                          *                           *

Have been able to catch up on my reading and we've been seeing a host of our favourite old movies in English, Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam. And yes, the phone has been instrumental in connecting up with many of our friends and relatives to exchange ideas/laugh over past events or jokes. Our exercising leaves much to be desired - a half an hour to 45' regimen that includes a short walk within the house followed by floor exercises and a bit of yoga have become a daily routine, both in the morning and in the evening. In the evenings, Lekha waters the plants and I give her company and help her with the shifting of the water hose from time to time.

The lock down has, indeed, thrown up a lot of unforeseen opportunities! Dunno what's in store for us in the coming days!! A mundane yet disciplined life, of course, where timings are followed to the minute!!!

Dalgona coffee.

Tiktok, Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest or What'sApp - wherever you go, the virtual aroma can be sensed. This lock down season, everyone seems to be smitten by the Internet's favourite beverage Dalgona coffee. The current pandemic having denied people spaces to socialise, a simple frothy coffee has united people who stay indoors offering them a culinary distraction from the gloomy crisis. And a lot has been happening over a coffee.

Thanks to its popularity during the COVID -19 season, Dalgona coffee also known as Quarantine Coffee, has become the favourite pastime of netizens who have found their perfect chill pill to bring down the heat, named after a South Korean toffee, a spongy candy made of melted sugar and baking soda. Several videos, clips and photographs of the fluffy layered coffee have emerged and what makes it special is its simple preparation, handy ingredients, uniqueness and its photogenic quality.

"And the time. It takes just five minutes to prepare Dalgona coffee", says a Doha-based YouTuber, who prepared Dalgona coffee with her son. Those who love Latte and Capuccino would definitely love Dalgona coffee. There's a bitterness to it. If someone wants to tone it down, they can reduce the coffee powder and add more sugar, Those who like espresso, too, will like the taste", she says.

Just three major ingredients are required to prepare Dalgona coffee - instant coffee, milk and sugar. Whipped to cloudy froth and served in coloured layers, the coffee has similarity to Indian Fenti Hui, where the beaten frothy caffeine mix is topped by milk. Dalgona coffee, on the other hand, is reverse Fenti Hui - a Korean twist to desi coffee!

A Kochi-based dentist, came to know of the coffee trend from Instagram and soon, decided to give it a try during the lock down period. A photography enthusiast, he didn't forget to record mouth-watering clicks of his culinary experiment. "I love cooking and it was an interesting activity to blend both my passions in Dalgona coffee. The ingredients were all at home and there was nothing to be specially bought. I prepared the cold coffee version : it was quite refreshing and my wife and kid loved it. Me too", he adds.

The coffee can be prepared in three ways - using hand blenders or by whisking or using shakers. The key is to get the perfect creamy texture. When added to chilled milk, layers are formed.

Improvised variations of the beverage with spruced up ingredients, addition of cocoa or cinnamon or vanilla or egg whites also feature in the trending #dalgonacoffeechallenge. The iced coffee has got a piping hot variant too.

Had got up at our usual time, the chores and was ready on time. Today, it was Lekha's show, all the way, as Suma had taken an off because of a painful leg. The list of groceries was passed on to the department store nearby over the telephone and the delivery boy had brought the stuff within half an hour!

We had neither hoarded nor stocked extra stuff on account of the lock down, but have never faced any shortage thus far. The vegetables are bought by the maid from a shop near her house and grocery comes by, as cited previously.
