The news that dominated almost the whole of the last couple of weeks have been about the leaked examination papers with the children coming out strongly against the CBSE hierarchy for the fiasco. The Economics paper of class XII and the Maths paper of class X are the culprits.
There's a probe on by the police and obviously, another within the CBSE. What saddens me is that from the news floating around, the whole world seems to be involved viz. students, parents, teachers, tutors, officials within the Board and is there anyone else that need to be accounted for? What a decline in the value system? It's a sad, very sad occasion and we need to introspect on this aspect.
Why do we even think of taking a short cut to clear examinations? Even if it's a minority - I hope I'm right in this assumption, at least - it's the unkindest cut to our societal ethics. Each generation has a responsibility towards the others and that's to endeavour to become good and honest citizens. If there is even one rotten apple, the entire population is deemed to be affected and shall carry the burden of shame to their graves.
Some inter-related queries that come to my mind are:-
(a) Can the children who've stooped low to pass in the examination wash away the guilt at any
point of their lives?
(b) How do the parents justify their damn and unpardonable patronage to the crime? Do they've
something to hide about themselves?
(c) And what reason do the teachers have to encourage such unacceptable behaviour? Does it
help them to cover their inadequacies?
(d) And what does one say about the value system of the officials in this bad scandal? Do they
have any at all?
My take.
The probe must be thorough and quick to bring the guilty to book - whatsoever their numbers may be. The punishment has to be such that it sets an example to those who might even have an inkling to go wrong/choose questionable means. By doing so, plug the leaks of the system and ensure that its porosity is a thing of the past but firstly, institute immediate corrective measures so that the children of the affected classes do not suffer and they are able to move on from the current mess!
Tailpiece.
1. The high point of the day was that I'd gatecrashed into a wedding in the forenoon and a reception-post-wedding in the evening of children to which my Maman was invited. I did apologise to both the parents for being shameless to gatecrash and both of them 'shushed' me from completing it saying that I, too, was very much part of their families. It showed their sweetness, their maturity!
2. Though Preetha was absent because of the 'hartal', Pushpakaran, the farmhand, had fetched up to do the spring cleaning of the house. Ramesh, the gardener, had also dropped in for trimming the grass patch. So, Lekha had company for almost the entire day.
