A great rescue and other stories.

1. From Despair to Ecstasy.

On 23 Jun, twelve boys belonging to the Wild Boars soccer team and their coach went on an adventure into a cave near the Thai-Myanmar border(Northern Thailand). Unfortunately for them, the rains came down hard, filling the cave system with water and trapping them behind a kilometre long labyrinth of passages. As their fellow citizens scripted a hard and brave rescue, with the generous help from highly skilled citizens of other countries, not just Thailand but millions across the world watched with awe and prayers on their lips.

Today the rescue was completed. Two British cave divers considered among the best in the world were the first to reach the boys in the Tham Luang cave. Other countries also pitched in generously with divers, logistic support, technology. It took them three different, hectic sorties to rescue the entire soccer team.

I also admire the steely character of the twelve boys and their coach for not losing hope during the long wait for rescue. My salutes to the entire bunch!

2. Speedier Container Transit Through Cochin Port.

The chief commissioner, customs and CGST, Kerala has said that by making scanning machines operational at the Cochin Port with immediate effect, the container transit through the port will become transparent and quicker.

By installing the gadget, the containers will be scanned within 36 seconds and the speed in delivery can be achieved for both exports and imports. The new system will not only eliminate the loss of time when containers move through the Direct Port Delivery(DPD) service but also reduce the overall cost of expenditure of export/import operations.

But will the port workers and their unions permit such smooth operations?

3. Stringent Driving Rules are Welcome.

Gaurav Panvali(36) of Haldwani has become the first person in Uttarakhand whose mobile phone was seized, for 24 hours, after he was caught talking while driving in the wake of an order from the Uttarakhand High Court, authorising the transport department to do so.

He, who runs a small grocery store, was caught riding a mobike, without wearing a helmet, jumped the red light twice and was talking on the phone.

To ensure road safety, the High Court had authorised the transport department to "seize phones of offenders temporarily for a period of 24 hours after issuing a valid receipt".

Tailpiece.

It was a thoroughly wet day, with rain pouring almost all through the day.
