An unsolicited advice for Remya Nambeesan.

Dear young lady,

Am impressed with the way you've come out in strong support of the actress who was molested and misbehaved with, over a year ago. Your strong views and the resignation from the primary membership of 'Amma' - on the sneaky reinstatement of Dileep into the organisation - are praiseworthy as you clearly stand by your ideology. To take the high moral ground within a seemingly hostile environment is not what lesser mortals do. So, take a bow from me and I'm sure there are many, out there, who'd endorse my statement.

Your observations about the many ills that prevail in the Malayalam film industry were factors that the general public had always doubted to be in existence but never dared to ask. However, certain points that you'd brought out in a recent interview are sure to raise more eyebrows as it had affected your chances within the industry and I shall run through them for the benefit of my readers:-

  (a) When you'd asked for better remuneration which was, still, nowhere near that of your male
counterparts because that would have been blasphemy for the industry's bigwigs..
  (b) When you'd insisted on seeing the script before the shoot.
  (c) Here people, who matter, do not expect a 'no' for an answer from their female colleagues as
they are expected to er, 'adjust/compromise'.

Your call for the Malayalam film industry to attain the following qualities is genuine:-

   (a) To become a transparent organisation.
   (b) Where every member is considered equal.
   (c) Where there should be no exploitation of any kind and
   (d) Where there is an atmosphere of working without fear.

These are not unattainable and should naturally be the texture of the organisation of the actors and the actresses who are deified by the people, thanks to the tremendous love and respect that they've for their 'idols'. That this has come about because they've seen them in the numerous, perfect roles that they have sashayed over the years, notwithstanding! Imagine their disappointment when they realise that their hero is a villain in real life!

Manju Warrier's resignation from your 'Women Collective in Cinema' must have come as a rude shock for you. In hindsight, her lending her shoulders to many of the social causes, now, seem to be a calculated move to remain in the limelight. She has been a terrible letdown and her deafening silence is a stab on your back! Sad!! And there might be pressure being applied on the victim(I'm yet to get over the logic of calling her a victim when the whole world is aware of her identity but be that as it may) to withdraw her complaint and it's also a sorry fact that none of the male actors - barring Prithviraj, I understand - have come in your support till date.

It's understood that you've a meeting with Amma's executive body shortly. Be wary about the script that is handed over by its powerful(?) management, which can never go wrong; there could still be a twist in the tale! Their query could be that if the wife - Manju Warrier obviously, since she has quietly resigned from the WCC - hasn't a problem, why should you have one? But what one can't comprehend is that 'does the Amma's management want us to believe that the molestation incident was a hare brained plot of 'Pulsar Suni' and that Dileep is squeaky clean; he has nothing to do with that horrific incident?'

If yes, they do have a damn poor opinion of the intellect of the general public. Sad, yet again!

So, take care and have your ammunition dry! Here's wishing you the very best in your crusade for a transparent Malayalam film industry!! And don't get hurt if you've unpleasant experiences, in the bargain, because you stand for the truth and the truth shall prevail, ultimately!!!

Tailpiece.

The district level quiz competition - organised by the Foundation and the cultural wing of the government - has been a resounding success with a massive and enthusiastic participation. The winners will, now, attend the state level competition at Thiruvananthapuram, scheduled on the 15th.
