What have we come to?

To my horror I saw a few photographs of the occasion when the 90 year old Congressman, Motilal Vohra had taken over as the new President of the Congress party in place of Rahul Gandhi, who has insisted on resigning from the post taking responsibility for the thrashing the party received at the general elections. But I've doubts about his sincerity on the issue because of the following statements that he's made thus far:-

    (a) Many senior leaders had not pulled together because they were only bothered about getting a
constituency for their children and had specifically mentioned Ashok Gehlot, P Chidambaram
and Kamal Nath in this connection.

    (b) He was sore that no senior leader of his party vigorously took up his 'chowkidar chor hai'
slogan during electioneering. What he didn't and couldn't comprehend was that they were
unwilling to carry on with a falsehood that their leader was trying to push through, the court
          restraint notwithstanding!

    (c) And by doing so, is it his way of getting rid of the entire lot of the old guard of the party
in one quick move? If that be so, he's committing 'harakiri' of the party because those old
people had toiled hard for the party's sustenance and well being. Wonder who's advising him
on these issues because they need to be identified and neutralised for the well being of the
party? Does he think that the younger crop of leaders would usher in a clean and ethical party?
I doubt it because most of them have come up through the short route and lack the moral
courage to stand up and say when a mistake is being committed because politics is about
standing for one's principles and fighting on issues while nurturing friendship with the
          members of the opposition!

     (d) And if he feels that by relinquishing the post of the party's president, only to manipulate the
goings on in the party from the shadows, he'd simply implode the Congress and endorse what
the opposition and the doubting Thomases have been saying, thus far!

     (e)  I can only wish the once mighty party the very best to come out of this very, very dangerous
           situation.

And now, to the meat of the matter.....

Two images shall linger in my mind for a long, long time.....

       * Motilal Vohra, who's in his 90s, touching the feet of Rahul Gandhi and
       * Dr Manmohan Singh clutching on to the bouquet that Vohra had given to Rahul.

It's the worst display of sycophancy! How does an elder do things just to show his thankfulness at having been made the president of his party? Perhaps, Mr. Vohra is thrilled that he'd join the likes of Jawaharlal Nehru and many other illustrious Congressmen in the list of leaders, to be counted for posterity! I'd like to believe that it's this feeling that made him bend down - despite his physical hardship - in front of an individual miles junior to him in age and no, I do not endorse it at all!! Sad!!!

And The Sad Case of Armymen vs. Armymen!

The disability pension to be brought under the income tax ambit is another misplaced thought of being morally right because - to quote the connected authorities - some among us, men-in-uniform, had wangled it because of our proximity with the appropriate people. Does one need to have 'enemies' if one had such 'friends'? Thank God that I left the IN in the pink of health with the medical category S1A1!

I have seen that atrocious letter written by a DGAFMS (Director General Armed Forces Medical Service). And no, by saying this I'm in no way endorsing the crooked among us - must hasten to add that it's a miniscule few - who have managed it; they ought to be brought to book for setting a bad example to the future generations!........er, is it possible?

Tailpiece.

Since Mini and Mithun's mom were leaving for Coimbatore, Lekha was gonna be alone and therefore, I decided to leave for Guruvayur this evening. My seat was confirmed in the morning by Paulson.

Left at 1700 hrs from the Foundation to the railway station but the train had, finally, left Thiruvananthapuram half an hour late and the cascading effect is gonna be there by the time the journey gets over!
