And This.

Today, while driving my car, I was listening to some discussions about the recent petrol hike on some FM channel. Almost all were blaming the centre for the unprecedented price hike which is now in three figures in most of the states.

In Madras, where I have been living for the past 70 years, the comparative rates of a few items given then and now.

Then my thoughts went back to early '70s when I was learning a 2-wheeler. Then the price was Rs.3.12 and another 12 paise for 25 cc of the oil (those days, both oil and petrol would be available separately and put in the tank). 3.12+0.12=3.24 for one litre and Rs.10/- for 3 litres of petrol and filling up air (in tips). Today's rate is Rs.300/- for the same 3 litres which is 30 times more.

But then tea (roadside shop) was 20 paise and now it's Rs.10/- which is 50 times more.

Indian Express newspaper was sold for Rs.5.70 for a month then which is now Rs.240/- almost 42 times more.

Veg meals in an ordinary hotel was Rs.3/- then and now is Rs.120/- which is 40 times more.

Cinema tickets in a normal theatre were priced at Rs.2.50 which is now not less than Rs.120/- which is again 48 times more.

Flowers - one cubit was around 25 paise then which is now selling at Rs.20/-.......80 times more.

Minimum bus fare was 10 paise and now it is Rs.4/- which is again 40 times more.

A new flat in Besant Nagar was only around Rs.30,000/- whereas it is around 1.5 crores (for the same plinth area) which is 500 times more.

Gold was sold at around Rs.30/- for a gram which is now Rs.4,500/- which is again 150 times more.

Average central government salary for clerks was Rs.250/- then and the same person's pension would be around Rs.25,000/- which is again 100 times more.

Business houses dealing with the above are all thriving except probably the government run transports.

So my question is, why such a hue and cry for the petrol hike alone?

Tailpiece.

Got up around 20' to 6, the chores and was ready for the 'khalifa', Sajish who'd come around by 7. A good haircut and massage by him began the day well.
