Bad news from Sri Lanka!

We have two of our immediate neighbours going through internal disturbances. It's a tragedy that could affect India in more ways than one. The hopeless situations have been brought about in those countries by the present set of rulers. Let's, without much ado, try to analyse as to what had horribly gone wrong in both the countries.

Sri Lanka

The country is under heavy security since yesterday after hundreds of protestors tried to storm the president's home in a night of violence and anger at the unprecedented economic crisis. People stand in long queues for food and fuel.

How did the country get into such a pathetic fiscal condition? Bad policies by the government - the four Rajapakse brothers viz. Gottabaya (president), Mahinda (prime minister), Chamal (his eldest brother and a minster), Namal (Mahinda's son) and the youngest, Basil, holding the finance portfolio and Shasheendra (nephew) - and as one can see, it's a family enterprise!

The massive food and economic crisis had followed the government's decision of tax reduction, money printing and organic farming. In Apr 2021, the government had declared that the entire country would immediately switch over to organic farming without providing adequate training to the farmers. Consequently, the 2021 rice harvesting failed, leading to the following :-

   - $11.2 billion emergency food aid programme
   - $200 million income support policy
   - huge sums of money to import hundreds of thousand tons of rice
   - and the organic farming was scaled back by the end of the year.

In foreign policy, too, the Rajapakse brothers made a huge mistake by cosying up to China at the cost of their relationship with India. The average Sri Lankan wants a peaceful existence with India.

The next few weeks would be interesting to watch as the opposition grows into stature!

Pakistan

The country is standing by for the results of the no-confidence-motion against Imran Khan tomorrow. The army has lost faith in him. The country is in a pathetic economic state and is a classic example of a failed state.

The political fallout after tomorrow would be worth watching.

Tailpiece.

Got up a trifle after 6, washing machinex of bed linen, limbering up for our journey tomorrow to my parents' place were he major activities of the day. Some work needs to be carried out in Raj Nivas.
