Why is this not the biggest news in India?
* Devastating floods in Silchar in Assam were man-made.
* It was sabotage by damaging the embankment of the Barak river.
* The accused are :-
Kabul Khan
Mithu Hussain Laskar
Nazir Hussain and
Ripon Khan.
Two people have been arrested in Assam's Cachar district in connection with the breaking of the Barak river embankment which resulted in a catastrophic flood in Silchar viz. Mithu Hussain Laskar and Kabul Khan.
On 24 May, the Water Resources department filed a police complaint against unknown miscreants for breaking through the embankment at Bethulkandi, about three kilometres from the town centre, to allow rainwater from a marsh to pour into the Barak river.
Assam's chief minister had earlier stated that the flood was a manmade calamity and that those responsible will face harsh punishment. The perpetrators of the embankment collapse that caused the deadly flood in Silchar town have been identified. The CID has been tasked to register the case in Guwahati and to carry out investigations.
Many areas of Cachar district's badly impacted Silchar town remain submerged. The death toll was 173 at the last estimate.
My take
It's nothing short of waging a war against the state. The perpetrators must be pin pointed, the case must be put on fast track and the guilty awarded with exemplary punishment.
Tailpiece.
Got up at 6, the chores and was ready by 10. The customary 'Wednesday aarathi' of the house was carried out earlier.
Kittu had come in when I'd opened up the front door to unlock the gate.
Another wet day.
