The Army has begun a review of the memoirs of its former chief Gen MM Naravane (Retd) after it mentioned sensitive details of Indian Army's response to Chinese PLA movement in 2020. The Indian government has also directed publisher Penguin Random House not to share excerpts or soft copies of the book until the review is over.
The memoirs published in parts by news agency PTI last month revealed unknown details of the Indian leadership's response to the 2020 standoff with China in eastern Ladakh in 2020 and on the discussions on various aspects of the Agnipath scheme of recruitment before it was launched last year.
In the memoir, Gen MM Naravane (Retd) has disclosed the the Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had given him a free hand to act following the movement of Chinese PLA tanks and troops on the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh. "Jo ucchit samjho woh karo" said Rajnath Singh.
The former chief also recalled that "a hundred different thoughts flashed through my mind" before his call to the then Northern Army Commander Lt Gen YK Joshi. "We cannot be the first ones to fire", I told him.....Instead, I told him to move a troop of our tanks right to the forward slopes of the Pass and depress their guns so that the PLA would be staring down the barrels of our guns," Gen Naravane has written.
The memoir, Four Stars of Destiny, were published by PTI on 18 Dec. According to sources in the Defence Ministry, memoirs and other such works by officers who have been in crucial rules in the Army are always reviewed before they get published due to the sensitive nature of content and its impact on the national security.
