Ridge Point and other stories.

1. Ridge Point

The Ridge Point  at Sakleshpur, Western Ghats of Karnataka - the fate of each rainfall is decided here. From here, it either ends up in the Arabian Sea or in the Bay of Bengal. Cool, isn't it?

The stone laid by the British officers has inscribed on it, the words - Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and the Ridge. If you were to travel towards Sakleshpur from Bisle Ghat, you will reach a scenic hamlet called Mankanahalli just 5 km from Bisle. There you will find an inscription laid on a concrete platform. The inscription makes a mention of the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and the 'Ridge'. This is the point in the mountains that determines which way rivers or streams are likely to flow.

British officers on their topographical survey of the Western Ghats found that it was the point where rain water splits and reaches two different seas. The rain water from the series of hills and mountains to the left of this point flows towards the west drainage basins that feed into the Arabian Sea while water from the right or eastern side drains into the Bay of Bengal.

The small rivers and streams that flow westward from this ridge point join the Kumaradhara and Nethravathi rivers after a short run varying from 20 - 60 km and finally meet the Arabian Sea. The eastward flowing water from this ridge flows for a length as tributaries of the Hemavathi river and is useful for irrigation and drinking water purposes.

2. Hilarious but a fact

In old Roman Courts, instead of taking oath on the sacred books, men used to swear holding their testicles. The word 'testify' originated from 'testicles'.

If proved false, the testes of the liars were cut and fed to the dogs nearby.

3. Did you know

(a) The statue of Neptune, God of Water, stands about 40 ft off the shores of Gran Canaria. Most of the day it is fully visible but when the tide comes in, it looks like it's emerging from the depths of the sea.

(b) Banana is a happy fruit. Eating just one can help you relieve irritable emotions, anger or depression.

(c) The full form of Google is "Global Organization of Oriented Group Language of Earth".

(d) Amorphophallus Titanium, one of the largest flowers in the world, blooms once every 40 years only for 4 days.

(e) The world's most expensive material is "Antimatter" i.e, 1 gm costs $25 Billion. Just 1 gm of this material is enough to destroy the entire New York City.

(f)  The Blue Java Banana is said to have the same consistency as ice cream and a similar flavour to vanilla.

Tailpiece.

Got up at 6, the chores and was ready by a half past 9. A quiet day. Took part in a webinar from 1600 - 1730 hrs on the new paper on environment passed by the central government to the state governments, for suggestions and additions and alterations.
