The Boom Supersonic Jet.

Rolls-Royce has thrown its significant expertise behind a project hoping to build the world's fastest civil aircraft with the test flights beginning next year.

Purpose

According to the Boom Technology, the purpose of XB-1 aircraft is to demonstrate and prove the key technologies for Overture, such as advanced carbon fibre composite construction and computer-optimised high-efficiency aerodynamics.

What is it

Boom Supersonic's XB-1, a 1:3 scale prototype of its upcoming supersonic commercial jet Overture, which, when completed, may be capable of flying at more than twice the speed of sound, with a range of 5,180 miles. It could take passengers from London to New York in just 3.5 hours - around half the time it currently takes.

* Max speed around 2,700 km/hr

* Carbon based materials - thermally stable supersonic speed

* Seating capacity between 55 to 75 people.

Estimated price

A one-way ticket from London to New York would cost around Pounds 2,000.
