A service officer's day.

I am an infantry officer who got married to a girl from a total non fauji background.

On joining the unit after marriage, she observed my routine.

My getting up early in the morning, leave at a quarter to 6 to join PT in white shirt, white half trousers, white socks and white PT shoes.

Return by 7.

Quick bath, change to OG uniform with well polished brass ranks on shoulder flaps, well polished and shining brass of the belt, black shining shoes.

A quick breakfast and 45 minutes later, there I go to the unit, take lectures of men during the training.

Complete office work, return home around a half past 2 or so.

Change for a short while in pyjama and kurta after lunch.

Get up at a quarter to 4, change to sports dress, join sports in the unit.

Return around 6 or so, change to mess dress. Wear black Oxford pattern shoes and Mess dress for a dinner night.

More or less such was routine. In mess parties wife accompanied me.

One day my sister-in-law rang my wife up and probably asked my wife as to what sort of work or job Jija jee does in the office.

To which my wife said (I was overhearing), "I do not know what all he does in the office but like ladies he keeps changing the clothes/dresses throughout the day.

The Leap year.

Dateline 28 Feb

All of us know that when a year is divisible by 4, it is known as a leap year. 2024 is a leap year and its February has 29 days.

The leap year correction is required because the number of days in a year is not 365 but 365.25. This extra 0.25 adds up to one day (0.25 x 4 = 1 day), every four years and it's adjusted in the leap year.

But it does not end with this.

The number of days in a year is not 365.25 but 365.24 only. This 0.01 difference adds up to 1 day (0.01 x 100 =1 day) every 100 years.

Hence, every century year will skip one leap year ie. the century years 2100, 2200, 2300 though divisible by 4, are not leap years. Now, hold your breath, it does not end up with this too. The number of days in a year is not 365.24 also and it is actually 365.2425. This additional 0.00025 adds up to 1 day (0.0025 x 400 = 1 day) in 400 years.

Hence the year that is divisible by 400 viz. 1600, 2000, 2400 and so on will be leap years.

In 2000, February had 29 days because it was a leap year as it was divisible by 400. This will happen only once in 400 years!

Our children and grandchildren will see that the year 2100 is not a leap year.

To be more precise, the accurate number of days in a year is 365.2422 which means there is still a difference 0.0003.

But we will stop with this.

The world's largest grain storage program.

PM Modi launched the largest grain storage program entailing an investment of Rs.1.25 lakh crores.

The PM launched the world's largest grain storage plan in the cooperative sector, with the inauguration of 11 godowns in primary agricultural credit societies (PACs) in as many states.

Under the program, 700 lakh ton of storage capacity will be created over the next five years in the cooperative sector by constructing thousands of godowns and warehouses.

* He also laid the foundation for creating godowns and other agri-infrastructure in 500 more PACs.
* Under the scheme, thousands of warehouses and godowns will be constructed across the country.
* He also inaugurated a project for computerisation of 18,000 PACs across the country.
* Farmers would now be able to store their produce in the godowns and warehouses, get institutional             credit against it and sell their items when market prices are remunerative.
* Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act has been amended and PACs are being computerised.
* Modi referred to former producer organisations (FPOs) , he said small farmers are becoming
entrepreneurs and even exporting their produce.
* In the next five years, the target is to set up 2 lakh PACs and the maximum will be in the fishery and
   allied farm sectors.
* The scheme aims to create storage capacity for storing 100% of India's grain production. It aims to
seamlessly integrate PACs godowns with the food grain supply chain, with a collaborative effort of
NABARD and spearheaded by the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC).

The initiative is being implemented through the convergence of various existing schemes like the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF), Agriculture Marketing Infrastructure (AMI), etc to enable PACs participating in the project avail subsidies and interest subvention benefits for undertaking infrastructure development.

The reality!

"I am not a Malala"
"I will never be a Malala"

"I am free and safe in Kashmir, India"
"I won't runaway and seek refuge in your country"

"Stop defaming my homeland by calling it Oppressed"

The paradox that is India!

1. Politicians divide us, terrorists unite us.

2. Everyone is in a hurry but no one reaches in time.

3. Priyanka Chopra earned more money playing Mary Kom, than Mary Kom earned in her entire career.

4. Most people who fight over Gita and Quran have probably never read any of them.

5. We rather spend more on our daughter's wedding than on her education.

6. The shoes that we wear are sold in air conditioned show rooms. The vegetables that we eat are sold on the footpaths.

7. We live in a country where seeing a policeman makes us nervous rather than feeling safe.

8. In IAS exam, a person writes a brilliant 1500-word-essay about 'How dowry is a social evil and cracks the exam by impressing everyone. One year later his parents demand a dowry in crores because he is an IAS officer.

9. Indians are obsessed with screen guards on their smartphones even though most come with scratch proof Gorilla glass but never bother wearing a helmet while riding bikes.

The best line, however, is.......

Try to understand people before trusting them because we are living in such a world where artificial lemon flavour is used for "Welcome Drink" and real lemon is used in "finger bowl".

Tailpiece.

Got up at my usual time, the chores and was ready by a quarter to 10.

Harbour trial for 'Samudrayaan'.

Preparations are on board to realise India's flagship manned deep sea exploration in 2025 in a homemade, world class submersible 'Matsya 6000'.

The harbour trial for Samudrayaan, a three member deep sea mission that is scheduled for 2025 will be conducted sometime in Mar-Apr this year in Madras, says National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT). It is an ambitious project of the Ministry of Earth Sciences and is being implemented as part of the Rs.4,800 cr 'Deep Ocean Mission'. NIOT is an autonomous society under the ministry.

Following the harbour trial, the NIOT will plan shallow water exploration at a depth of 500 mts before the final deep sea mission at 6,000 mts some time next year. The shallow water exploration is being planned in the Bay of Bengal in a steel submersible.

The NIOT has recruited a former naval officer to pilot the Samudrayaan exploration. It is training some ocean scientists as pilots who will conduct deep sea exploration. In the latter half of the year, the delivery of titanium alloy human sphere, which will seat the three ocean explorers from the ISRO. Syntactic foams for the manned chamber - are being imported and delivered - as it is a mixture of billions of microscopic hollow glass or ceramic spheres in epoxy or plastic resin are widely used in submarines because of their remarkable buoyancy and strength.

Matsya 6000 will be tested and certified by DNV (world class Norwegian classification society and a recognised advisor for the maritime industry) to go down 6,000 mts inside the Indian Ocean for a duration of 12 hrs though it is being developed and tested for 96-hour endurance.

Matsya will take three hours to go down 6,000 mts and three hours to come up, with six hours for scientific exploration of the sea.

The Samudrayaan mission will bring India on the world map of manned deep sea explorations in indigenous vehicles after the US, Russia, France, Japan and China.

Neuralink.

Neuralink Patient Can Control Mouse Through Thought : Musk

Neuralink's first human patient with a brain chip is able to control a computer mouse using thoughts, founder Elon Musk says.

Patient recovers with no ill effects

"Progress is good and the patient seems to have made a full recovery, with no ill effects that we are aware of," Musk said in a space event on X. "Patient is able to move a mouse around the screen by just thinking", he added. Last month, Neuralink's implant was given to the first human patient and initial results showed promising neuron spike detection.

Aim to restore capabilities in patients

* Neuralink's implant is designed to help humans use their neural signals to control external technologies and its long term vision is to restore lost capabilities such as vision, motor function and speech.

* Neuralink uses a robot to surgically place a brain-computer interface implant in a region of the brain that controls the intention to move.

* $5 billion was the valuation of neuralink in Jun 2023!

My take

Galloping technology needs to be harnessed appropriately.

The water bell scheme.

In Kerala's school's to keep kids hydrated.

As temperatures begin to soar, the Kerala government directed schools to ring the bell twice a day so as to remind students to consume water.

Drink water even if you don't feel thirsty

Education Minister asked schools to ring the bell at 1030 hrs and 1430 hrs as a reminder to students to take water. He advised students to drink water even if they did not feel thirsty. Consuming enough water is the only way to fight adverse impacts of heat. Orders have been issued to make arrangements for supply of clean drinking water.

Pilot project on hydration began in 2019

Kerala was the first state to implement such an initiative in 2019 in a few schools. The scheme has now been extended to all schools in the state. Taking a cue from Kerala, Telangana and Karnataka have implemented it.

Four districts of the state to have above normal temperatures.

My take

And 'Meenachoodu' is still far away!

An interesting information!

I'd like to share my experience in shifting my mother from Pune to Gurgaon Recently.

She had a fall and surgery and post that was advised no flight travel.

I came across something called a train ambulance. These are private operators who provide a bed to bed service via train.

They operate pan India and have options  of a general/semi ICU/full ICU set up. Booking is done in in regular trains in second AC/first AC.

You get an attendant and a doctor for the whole journey. Pick up is by ambulance - transfer to train - ambulance and drop off.

This [articular agency was super professional.

How Biden and the Democrats are doing it wrong!

New York Judge fines Donald Trump, his organisation $355 million in penalties for duping banks with inflated claims.

Interest of $100 million added to overall bill.

New York Banks cannot lend to Trump.

  *      *       *

Biden, his cronies and Donald Trump's haters have been giving the former President a rough time all this while by harassing him in some case or the other.

What they don't realise is that the common man is watching the entire range of horror unleashed on the hapless guy and are slowly being convinced that Trump is not being given an even playing field towards the run up to the 2024 Presidential elections.

It will, finally, give Trump the victory in the 2024 Presidential Elections!

Lakshadweep's Minicoy and Agatti to get naval bases.

India will soon extend its naval footprint  by establishing naval bases in Agatti and Minicoy Islands along with air bases in order to secure the vital sea lanes of communication.

Government has decided to build a new airstrip at Minicoy Islands and upgrade the airstrip at Agatti Islands with plans station naval assets at "INS Jatayu".

This decision dovetails into the government's strategy to use its island's territories to project power in the Indo-Pacific in support of the maritime security of the region.

India will soon make a major maritime security statement after INS Vikramaditya and INS Vikrant carrier task forces which includes nearly 15 warships will travel to Minicoy Islands with naval brass to inaugurate a naval base "INS Jatayu" on 04 - 05 Mar.

India's defence minister will be on board.

The Indian Navy plans to hold the first phase of the Combined Commanders Conference on board Indian aircraft carriers with the two Armadas travelling from Goa to Karwar to Minicoy Islands to Kochi.

The second phase of the commanders' conference will be held 06 07 Mar.

While India is already developing its force capability in Andaman and Nicobar Islands with new facilities at Campbell Bay in Great Nicobar, the move to upgrade the Lakshadweep and Minicoy Islands will not only protect commercial shipping but also lead to infrastructure upgrades and tourism in the island territories.

The Lakshadweep and Minicoy Islands sit on the nine-degree channel through which billions of dollars' worth of commercial trade passes through, while en route to South East Asia and North Asia. Minicoy Islands is a mere 524 km from Maldives.

The geographical location of Lakshadweep and Minicoy Islands and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is such that India can safeguard the maritime trade routes while countering the challenge of the rapidly expanding Chinese Navy and their supplicants in the Indian Ocean.

Bad roads can bring back a dead person to life!

Ramwati Devi, 71, who was declared dead by the doctors of  a Chhattisgarh hospital, came back to life soon after her dead body entered the limits of her native state.

The incident happened on 11 Feb when she complained of uneasiness and was admitted to a private hospital in Korva district of Chhattisgarh. She died in the hospital during treatment the next day.

Her two sons, then, decided to perform the last rites at their native village Neem a Chandpura in Bihar's Begusarai district. They hired a private vehicle to take the body there.

Nearly 18 hours of their journey, the sons noticed some activities in the body of their mother. Initially they could not believe their eyes but the activities became more evident when they reached Aurangabad in Bihar.

They parked the vehicle by the road and observed the activities in the dead body for some time. They rushed to Begusarai sadar hospital where she was admitted to ICU. The doctor who is attending to Ramwati said that she was responding to the line of treatment and her condition had improved. She was put on a ventilator immediately after being admitted to the hospital.

He said the patient was being brought by road, the jerk of the vehicle might have worked as Cardio Pulmonary Resustication (CPR) due to which she regained consciousness.

My take

Ramwati has got many more years to live!

Can this record be beaten?

Mr Allen Swift     1908 - 2010

This man owned and drove the same car for 82 years.

Can you imagine even having the same car for 82 years?

Mr. Allen Swift (Springfield, MA) received this 1928 Rolls Royce Piccadilly - P1 Roadster from his father, brand new - as a graduation gift in 1928.

He drove it, up until his death at the age of 102.

He was the oldest, living owner of a car that was purchased new.

Just thought you'd like to see it.

It was donated to a Springfield museum after his death.

It has 1, 070, 000 miles on it, still runs like a Swiss watch, dead silent at any speed and is in perfect condition at 82 years of age. That's approximately 13,048 miles per year, 1,087 miles per month.

1,070, 000! That's miles not kilometers!

That's British engineering of a bygone era. I don't think they make them like this any more!

3. Investors are assured of the market value of gold at the time of maturity and additional interest of 2.50%
    every year.

5. No GST on SGB.

Taxation on SGB

Credit card debt doesn't just skew family budgets: it triggers a cascade of humiliation and anxiety, causing a massive household crisis. The frightening nature of plastic debt underlines the need for financial awareness and stringent regulatory frameworks.

Sharp rise in cybercrimes!

India has witnessed a substantial increase in cybercrimes - from 50,035 in 2020 to 65,893 in 2022 - according to the latest data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). Telangana and Karnataka topped topped the list, recording 15,297 and 12,556 cases respectively in 2022.

Keeping in view the sharp increase in the number of such cases, the Union Home Ministry has constituted seven Joint Cyber Coordination Teams (JCCTs) for cybercrime hotspots such as Mewat, Jamtara, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Visakhapatnam and Guwahati.

In Telangana, the reported incidents of cybercrimes increased nearly three times from 5,024 in 2020 to 15,297 in 2022. In Karnataka, the cases rose from 10,741 to 12,556. The other two states that reported the highest numbers were Uttar Pradesh with 10,117 cases in 2022 (though it relatively fell from 11,097 cases in 2020) and Maharashtra which reported 8,249 cases in 2022 against 5,496 in 2020.

The JCCTs will be equipped with cutting-edge technology and the teams are under the 'Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) covering the whole country and onboarding law enforcement agencies of states and UTs to crack down on cybercrime hotspots with multijurisdictional issues.

A series of workshops were held in strategic locations in 2023. Each workshop served as a crucible, forging unity among diverse law enforcement agencies to tackle the ever-evolving landscape of cybercrime. The 'Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System under the I4C, had been launched for immediate reporting of financial frauds and to stop siphoning off funds by fraudsters.

A toll-free helpline number 1930 has been operationalised to get assistance in lodging online cyber complaints. About 3.2 lakh SIM cards and 49,000 IMEIs have been blocked.

The Israel - Gaza war (1).

Hamas proposes 3-phase truce-plan : 45 days for each phase

First phase.

All Israeli women hostages, males under 19 and the elderly and sick would be released in exchange for female and underage Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails. Israel would withdraw troops from populated areas.

Second phase.

Release of remaining male hostages; full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.

Third phase.

Bodies and remains of hostages to be exchanged; hopefully end of war pact as well.

* Hamas wants release of 1,500 prisoners from Israeli jails. Hamas would pick one third of them from a list of Palestinians serving life term.
* 132 hostages still in Hamas custody, about 30 already dead.
* War toll so far : 27,708  A Hamas estimate.

My take

This truce will never take off because Israel has vowed never to leave Gaza and Hamas, after having committed aggression, has the cheek to dictate terms with false statistics!

The Myanmar border to be fenced.

The government has decided to fence the entire 1,643-km-long India-Myanmar border, which hopefully would end the Free Movement Regime (FMR) prevalent along the existing porous border.

To facilitate better surveillance, a patrol track along the border will also be paved.

A 10-km stretch of the border in Moreh in Manipur has already been fenced and two pilot projects of fencing through a hybrid surveillance system are under execution.

The FMR facilitates people living close to the border to venture 16 km into each other's territory without any document. The Myanmar border which passes through Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh, currently has FMR, as it was introduced by the Modi government in 2018 as part of India's Act East Policy.

Imphal valley-based Meitei groups have long been demanding fencing along the border, particularly after ethnic violence in the state, which started in May last year. They have been alleging that tribal militants often enter into India through the porous borders. The Meitei groups also allege that narcotics is being smuggled into India taking advantage of the unfenced international border.

Manipur shares around 390 km of border with Myanmar but only 10 km has been fenced so far. In july, the government shared data with the Union Ministry of Home Affairs that around 700 illegal immigrants entered the state.

Mizoram has also seen an influx of anti-Junta rebels in thousands since the military coup in Myanmar on 01 Feb 2021. According to government estimates, several thousand refugees are living in different parts of Mizoram since the coup. Mizoram shares a 510-km-long border with Myanmar.

The CPM comes around!

In the state budget, this year, the LDF's finance minister has said that the government welcomes foreign universities and educational institutions in the state.

Sometime in 2016, Mr TP Srinivasan, former ambassador, had articulated the same idea when the SFI students had cornered him, bashed him up leaving him badly mauled and bleeding, saying that what he had uttered was blasphemous!

Today, when two of the top spokespersons for the party - one was none other than the party's current state secretary and the other was the Minister of Higher Education - had articulated the idea, there was no remorse, no apology for changing its stance so dramatically!

The SFI has, however, issued its disapproval to the idea.

US - UK against Houthis.

In joint operation, US and UK hit 36 Houthi targets in Yemen.

The US, UK troops bombed Houthi targets at 13 locations in Yemen, with support from Australia, New Zealand, Bahrain, Canada, Denmark and the Netherlands.

Strikes to degrade militia's capability : US

The US Central Command in a X post said it struck Houthis' multiple underground storage facilities, command and control, missile systems, UAV storage and operation sites, radars and choppers. The strikes will degrade Houthis' capabilities to attack US Navy, merchant vessels in the region and make international waters safe and more secure, said the US.

Rebels warn of escalation of conflict

* These attacks will not discourage Yemeni forces from maintaining their support for Palestinians in the face of the Zionist occupation and crimes," Houthi sources said. "The aggressors' airstrikes will not go unanswered."

* Separately, US struck a Houthi anti-ship cruise missile in self defence.

Could a lie be better than a truth?

The Mahabharata tells the story of a Brahmin called Kausika who had taken a vow to always tell the truth. Once, when he was meditating in the forest, a young couple ran past him. Kausika noticed them. A little while later, a group of armed robbers came running. They stopped and asked Kausika which way the couple had escaped. Kausika understood the situation and the danger to the couple if he spoke the truth.. Yet, due to his vow, he told the robbers. The robbers caught up with the couple and robbed and killed them.. Kausika had to go to hell after death.

This is a curious situation where somebody went to hell for telling the truth. Would it have been better for Kausika to tell a lie? What about telling others to lie? For example, a parent might send their young child to ward off an unwelcome visitor at the door and tell a lie that they are not at home.

There are two views about always speaking the truth. One emphatically says yes. The German philosopher Immanuel Kant said that truth-telling is a "perfect duty" which cannot be overridden by other values like sparing someone's life or their feelings. In this view, Kausika was obligated to tell the truth.

The other view says it is not always so black and white. The Mahabharata says :

  Bhavet satyamvaktavyam na vyaktavya manushthitam
  Satyanrite vinishchatya tato bhavati dharmavita.

Words that are literally true need not necessarily be the truth: one needs to consider the effect of the words to determine if they are the truth or untruth.

Mahabharata further elaborates on what it means by the effect of the words :

  Sarvasvasyapahaare tu vaktavymanritam bhavet
  Tatranritam bhavet satyam chapyanritam bhavet
  tadrisham pashyate balo yasya satyamanushthitam.

If one's everything is being threatened, one may resort to a lie to save oneself: in this situation, a lie has the effect of a truth and a truth has the effect of a lie. Only a fool imagines that literal truth is required to be spoken under all circumstances.

In the prashnottar-ratne-malika, ascribed to Adi Shankaracharya among others, the following question-answers can be seen :

'Who is not to be trusted?'
'One who, as a rule, utters lies.'
'On what occasions, even a lie is sinless?'
'That which is uttered for the sake of protecting dharma.'

There are no easy answers to the moral dilemma of choosing between truth and lie in certain situations. If we do choose to tell a lie, we have to make sure we are doing it for a justifiable reason like preventing harm; not for our own convenience or benefit.

The myth of the Pandora's box.

Long ago, there lived a titan named Prometheus, who loved the humans he'd created. He wanted to help them and he taught them many skills and arts. He also stole fire from the gods and gave it to the humans, so that they could keep warm and cook their food.

The gods, especially Zeus, the king of the gods, were angry with Prometheus for his disobedience and his generosity. They decided to punish him and the humans, for their insolence. Zeus ordered Hephaestus, the god of fire and metal work, to create a woman out of clay. He named her "Pandora", which means "all gifted" and he gave her many gifts, such as beauty, charm, intelligence and curiosity. He also gave her a box and he told her never to open it. He said that it was a wedding present and that it contained many blessings for her and her future husband.

Zeus then sent Pandora to Earth, where she met and married Epimetheus, the brother of Prometheus. Epimetheus was a kind and gentle titan, who accepted Pandora as his wife, despite the warnings of his brother. He loved Pandora and he gave her a beautiful home and garden. He also showed her his collection of animals, which he had named and cared for.

Pandora was happy with Epimetheus but she was also curious about the box that Zeus had given her. She wondered what was inside and why she was not allowed to open it. She thought that it must be something very good and very valuable. She wanted to see it and share it with her husband. She asked Epimetheus if she could open the box, just a little bit, but he refused. He told her that Zeus had forbidden it and they should respect his wish. He told her that the box was a mystery and that they should leave it alone.

Pandora tried to obey but she couldn't resist her curiosity. She though that Epimetheus would not notice and that Zeus would not care. She thought that it was harmless and that it was fun. She waited until Epimetheus was away and then she sneaked to the box. She lifted the lid and she peeked inside.

But as soon as she did, a swarm of evil things flew out of the box. They were diseases, pains, sorrows, fears, wars, crimes and all kinds of misfortunes. They spread over the Earth and they attacked the humans and the animals. They caused suffering and death and they made the world a dark and dreadful place.

Pandora was horrified and she quickly closed the box. She realised that she had made a big mistake and that she had unleashed a curse. She cried and she apologised but it was too late. The evil things had escaped and they could not be put back.

Epimetheus returned and he saw what had happened. He was shocked and saddened and he blamed Pandora for her folly and her disobedience. He also blamed himself for his weakness and his ignorance. He wished he had listened to his brother and that he had never accepted Pandora as his wife. He wished that he had never seen the box and that he had never opened it.

But as he was lamenting, he heard a faint voice coming from the box. It was a sweet and soothing voice and it said, "Do not despair, for there is still hope". Epimetheus and Pandora looked at each other and they felt a glimmer of hope in their hearts. They opened the box again and they saw a small and delicate creature, with wings and a halo. It was Hope, the only good thing that Zeus had put in the box and the only that had not escaped. Hope flew out of the box and she touched the humans and the animals with her light. She gave them courage and comfort and she helped them cope with their troubles. She told them that there was still beauty and goodness in the world and they should not give up.

And so, the myth of Pandora's box became a legend and a symbol of the origin of evil and the power of hope. It also explained why life is full of hardships and joys and why humans have to struggle and strive. It was a tale of curiosity and consequence, of temptation and redemption, of Pandora, the first woman and the box that changed the world.

"Rang Ghar' to get a facelift.

The Assam chief minister performed the "bhoomi pujan" for a beautification project of the architectural heritage. The PM had laid the foundation stone for the project in April last year.

Built during the reign of Ahom ruler Swargadeo Rudra Singha in 1744, Rang Ghar is Asia's oldest surviving amphitheatre and a symbol of Assam's cultural heritage. It stands tall near Sivasagar town in upper Assam.

It's a two-storey building, constructed specially for enjoyment of recreational/sports activities by the royal families of the Ahom dynasty.

The state's architecture took a new form after Swargadeo Rudra Singha had established the capital at Rangpur. The Doul Pukhuri dug under his stewardship added a new dimension to the glory of Rangpur.

The project's outlay entails a financial outlay of Rs.140 crores and it would be completed and dedicated to the people before 2026.

The beautification plan includes building an encroachment-free perimeter, an amphitheatre with seating capacity for 3,000 people and other amenities.

Factors about the economy.

Core sector growth slows to 14-month low in Dec 2023

Growth of eight key infrastructure industries slipped to 3.8% due to poor performance of crude oil, electricity, steel and cement sectors.

Last reported low was 0.9% in Oct '22

For Dec 2022, the growth of the eight core sectors was 7.4%. The last time the growth was so bad was in Oct 2022, at 0.9%. The eight core sectors are cement, coal, crude oil, electricity, fertilisers, natural gas, refinery products and steel. The cumulative growth of the key sectors during Apr-Dec 2023 was flat at 8.1% versus 8% a year ago.

Industrial growth rate may slow down

* Crude oil production in Dec 2023 witnessed a decline of 1% compared to Dec 2022. The other seven sectors grew but at a slow pace. The eight core industries' numbers are significant as they carry a 40.27% weight in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP).

* Slow core sector growth means industrial growth may power down.

My take

Points to ponder!
