Just in jest!

Dateline 29 Sep.....

Everything I need to know about life, I learned from Noah's Ark.....

1. Don't miss the boat.

2. Remember that we are all in the same boat.

3. Plan ahead. It wasn't raining when Noah built the Ark.

4. Stay fit. When you're 600 years old, someone may ask you to do something really big.

5. Don't listen to critics; just get on with the job that needs to be done.

6. Build your future on high ground.

7. For safety sake, travel in pairs.

8. Speed isn't always an advantage. The snails were on board with the cheetahs.

9. When you're stressed, float a while.

10. Remember, the Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by professionals.

11. No matter the storm, when you are with God, there's always a rainbow waiting..

Got up in the morning, today, a bit later than yesterday. The alarm woke Lekha and me at a half past 5, the chores and we were ready by a half past 7. A quick breakfast of idlis, chutney and sambar, with Chittamma egging us to eat and we were headed towards Muhamma soon after. Reached Mallan's clinic by a half past 8 and therefore we'd to wait for a while.

The surgery was over by about a quarter past eleven. Four implants have been fixed on to Lekha's lower jaw. The doctor briefed us about the dos and the don'ts. Will have to return on 12 Oct for the removal of the stitches.

Took off for Guruvayur by 1415 hrs and drove straight to the Geeyem motors at Puzhakkal, Thrissur. The warning lamps of the engine and the battery came on many times during the journey though there weren't any effects on the overall running of the car. Spent an hour there for the mechanics to check. It seemed to be rogue calls on first look. They will take the vehicle tomorrow to have another check.

Lekha seemed to be okay except for the numbness she has, around the area of surgery. She had the medicines ordered by the doctor, food that was at room temperature and went about her usual chores.

Meanwhile, I'd opened up the house and and unpacked our bags.

At Kochi.

The day had begun at 4, when Lekha's cellphone's alarm had come to life. We went through the chores, Lekha prepared our packed breakfast of appams and tomato chutney. By the time we'd kicked off from 'The Quarterdeck', it was a half past 6 - and we were half an hour behind schedule! I took the Aluva route and therefore, passed through Thrissur town and then passed the Paliyekkara tollgate without having to stop, phew!

The FASTag has settled down at its optimum! Somewhere short of Chalakkudi, there was a half an hour's traffic snarl due to a nasty accident between a private bus and a maxi cab and the policemen at the site diverted us through the service road. The rest of the passage was smooth except for the continuous amber glow of the engine on the Chevy's dashboard.

By the time we reached Kochi, it was pouring and when we reached ShenoyCare it was a half past 9 and the new parking area was full of slush. I could shepherd Lekha safely into the reception so that she could go through the registration formalities without much ado. Lekha's parameters were within acceptable limits and the doctor was damn happy to see her. Her next visit has been slated for 28 Dec.

We, then, shot off to Dr Satish Bhat with my lab test results. He, too, was happy with the progress and our next tryst has also been slated for 28 Dec. A quick lunch at the 'Oottupura' at Panampilli Nagar - Rajani, looked after us well, taking care of our needs.

We were off to my cousin, Advocate Prabha's chambers and had a long chat to catch up with her. The Chevy was parked at Oottupura and we went by an autorickshaw because of the parking difficulty near her office. We were meeting up with her for the first time after Ramakrishnan's passing away. She is gonna go for a surgery of both her wrists, for better blood circulation in her hands, which is scheduled for the 10th of next month. She dropped us back to our car, while helping us pick up a few things enroute amid heavy rain.

We sat in her car through the rain and then left for our final destination at Leela chittamma's house at Kunnumpuram. It was almost two years since we'd dropped there and it was a grand homecoming! It was yakkittiyak all through the evening with Salini, her daughter-in-law and Lakshmi, her chirpy and cute granddaughter. The little one, also, did help me out with the glitches of my cellphone in a jiffy. Phew! Chittamma's culinary prowess was on display with the lovely spread of dinner; damn sweet of her!

It was a late night but as we hit the sack, we'd still not finished with our conversation!

Kittu had seen us off early in the morning as he stuffed in the biscuits, offered to him

Miyawaki forests.

With the diminishing forest cover all around the world, thanks to the indiscriminate clearing of large swathes of forest by mankind - in pursuit of livelihood - the extreme effects of climate changes have begun to be felt. Miyawaki forests have become increasingly popular, though it can never be a substitute to lush, natural forests. Let's try to understand this Japanese phenomenon.

The Miyawaki way

* Akira Miyawaki was a Japanese botanist who popularised the 'potted seedling method' or the Miyawaki technique.

* The Miyawaki way is an afforestation method where native species are chosen to create dense, multilayered forests that can self sustain after two years. It can be created in small patches of land, making it an attractive option.

* Miyawaki technique has 30 times more capacity to absorb CO2 than monoculture.

The Process

* The area where a Miyawaki forest is to be created is surveyed for soil texture, carbon content, pH and natural vegetation.
* Plant species that would have existed without human impact are chosen as the native species of the land.
* Nearest natural forests are visited to shortlist the native species and discover ways in which plant species might interact and support each other.
* Consists of four layers viz., Canopies, Trees, Sub-trees and Shrubs.

Criticism against the technique

Experts warn that Miyawaki can in no way be a replacement for the natural forests. In coastal areas like Madras, where the only dense forests are mangroves, native trees are the ones that sprawl rather than growing straight up. Also, there could be high costs in raising trees in a degraded land.

Questions left unanswered

* Could the Miyawaki technique be used even in areas where there is a natural absence of dense forest growth?
* Does dense planting allow large trees like teak to fully mature and produce natural canopies?
* What kind of animals benefit from these dense plantations?

Footprints across the globe

In India, multiple states including Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Kerala and Telangana have adopted the technique. In the Mediterranean ecosystems, the system was used starting from 2000. Pakistan, China and Japan have rapidly adopted the technique.

What attracts?

The forest sequesters carbon, supports wildlife, recharges ground water and improves air quality. It helps fight the urban heat island effect, the condition where an urban area is warmer than its surrounding rural areas.

Just walk!

Keep your legs active and strong!

* As we put on years and keep getting old on a daily basis, our feet must always remain active and strong. As we are constantly aging/get aged, we should not be afraid of our hair turning grey or skin sagging or wrinkles on face.

* Among the signs of longevity and long fit life, strong leg muscles are listed as the most important and essential one. Please walk daily.

* If you don't move your legs for just two weeks, your real leg strength will decrease by 10 years. Just walk.

* A study says that both young and the old - during two weeks of inactivity - the legs muscle strength can weaken. So just walk.

* As our leg muscles weaken, it will take a long time to recover, even if we do rehabilitation and exercises later. Walk.

* Therefore, regular exercise like walking, is very important.

* The whole body weight/load remains and rest on the legs.

* The feet are like a set of pillars, bearing the entire weight of the human body. Walk everyday.

* Interestingly, 50% of a person's bones and 50% of the muscles, are in the two legs. Do walk.

* Strong bones, strong muscles and flexible joints form the iron triangle that carries the most important load ie. the human body.

* 70% of human activity and burning of energy in one's life is done by the two feet.

Got up at a trifle past 6, the chores and was ready by a quarter to 10. Today, is the 41st day after the passing away of Pidavoor Amma; the entire family had conglomerated in the house at Pidavoor. Padmakumar and Rema had reached there yesterday afternoon.

Left for the Geeyem Motors to collect our Chevy around a quarter past 10 in a private bus. The new fuel pump has been connected up and the body has also been done up. However, the drive wasn't smooth as the laying of the GAIL gas pipeline was on in full swing and the road had narrow stretches at many places resulting in traffic clutter caused by impatient motorists!

Adieu Jatinder Sidhu!

Jatinder and Lt HS Sidhu were a lively couple at INS Agrani, when I was posted there from Jun '84 to early '87. He possessed a fantastic sense of humour while she was a dignified lady, ever smiling, outgoing and helpful. Since Sidhu and I were contemporaries, she took me along as a close friend and well wisher.

I fondly remember the countless times that I had been at their place, be it for a Sunday breakfast of steaming paranthas and 'sarson ka saag', a quickly ruffled up biriyani lunch or a three-course dinner accompanied with lively music, heated/interesting conversations punctuated with frequent guffaws - they were good hosts.

I still have a photograph of her giving me a gift during one of the Husbands' Nights at the establishment, in my personal album.

After my tenure there, we never came across each other but I used to get information about their whereabouts from mutual friends. Some time back, she had suffered a spinal injury owing to an accident and was bed ridden. I'd the fortune to talk to her in that medical condition of hers, just before the onset of Covid and realised that neither had she lost the verve nor her zest for life and had retained the warmth and friendliness in abundant measure. And we spoke for very long then - now, looking back in hindsight! - little realising that it was gonna be our last conversation!

We human beings get busy with our own lives and do not spend time or efforts to nurture a relationship. It happened in this case, too, and I was smug at the thought that she was doing well, despite her unfortunate medical condition.

So, yesterday, it was like a bolt from the blue when my friend and senior, Ravi Ponappa - he was also with us at Agrani, gave me the sad news that she'd passed into the mist of time - and I quote, "Mrs Sidhu passed away due to cardiac arrest, after spending five weeks in the ICU, at Chandigarh. Perhaps, she was on life support systems as I make out. Cremation over. She was very close to my mother till mum passed away. She was with my mum for the entire duration of the cremation proceedings. Om Shanti".

Along with it was Sidhu's cryptic message, "With profound grief, I inform that my wife, Jatinder passed away this morning due to cardiac arrest. She was in the ICU for the last five weeks. Cremation took place at 1130 hrs in Chandigarh".

I can never forget the bubbly self that she was and have still not been able to accept that she's no more amid us.

Adieu Jatinder! Om Shanti! Sadgati. My salute and tears to a wonderful human being.

The lengthened shadow of PM Narendra Modi.

Today's India is the lengthened shadow of one man. Mr Narendra Modi, the honourable Prime Minister of India.

In the annals of history we find men who rose above others, through the power of their character and genius that changed the course of history. As they had ideas and character beyond their times they were invariably misunderstood too. Be that Pythagoras, Socrates, Jesus, Luther, Copernicus, Galileo or Newton, it happened with everyone. But they stood by their conviction, despite the opposition.

Emerson, the great philosopher says that the essence of the greatness lies in being true to one's own self. That is what I find the greatest virtue in Narendra Modi's personality. As Emerson said, "All history resolves itself very easily into the biography of a few stout and earnest persons".

I believe the history of the rise of the Indian nation when it would be written 50 years from now, would revolve around the biography of one man - Narendra Modi.

The Miracle Birth Of A Nation's Messiah

The collective consciousness of a society in distress and despair also creates its saviour; a great man who leads the society out of the despair where the soil had its civilization contaminated by invaders time and again. So, Narendra Modi.

Modi's journey is like a monk who had to take up politics as a weapon to serve the land that deserves to be known as one of the most dynamic nation on this earth. With him emerging into the power, there has been a growing feeling of unrest, uncertainty, disapproval in India about the economy, social and religious strife. The way Indian civilisational history was trampled by many rulers who never owned up to their mistakes that led to the curtailment of millions of Hindu lives and their rich culture, found refuge in the vision of this one Man. The much needed winds of change and then the Indianness (Hindutva) found its expression in Narendra Modi, who led a movement which has already begun and led it to its victory. He gave voice to the gut feelings of millions. He became the spark that ignited the lost patriotism with the right measure of nationalism mixed into it which spread into the nation's psyche as a must character all countrymen should have.

The great movements of history were not entirely the creation of the great men of history. We, his supporters are those millions of soldiers without whom it would not have been possible. History of today's India when it will be written in future may not name us individually but it will be the biography of this leader who reflects us; us, the common people! Let us stay in solidarity to support the vision of this true son of India, engaged in putting the nation in order.

THE LEGACY - THUS FAR

His strong leadership, fair governance, aimed vision and resilience to bring back the shine on the hue of his motherland is commendable. He has only opposed and deranged visions to the great deeds he is marching on with! Salutes to him on his birthday as he tramples the opposition with ease and elan, staying courageous on his path of excellence.

Narendra Modi is not just a name but a metaphor already! Happy birthday to the most visionary leader of India's contemporary history!

Is Turkey the real leader?

Turkey, meaning Erdogan, wants to be the leader of the Muslim world. He has been doing a lot of things towards that position. Why is that country gaining precedence over Saudi Arabia?

Saudi has oil, that's it, nothing else. Many other sources for oil have been developed, so, Saudi is not unique.

Turkey has no oil but it has the Bosphorus! A strait that is in its territory and is an access/exit to the Black Sea and Danube. To understand the importance of the Bosphorus, one must understand the term 'land-locked country'. The black Sea has five countries, the Danube goes through nine (Romania and Bulgaria being common to both), so let us say twelve countries depend upon these two water bodies for their trade. Then the Don and the Dnieper rivers give access to the vast hinterland of Russia in addition to Belarus and Georgia. The count is now sixteen. Then land-locked countries neighbouring those that have direct access to these water bodies, also depend on these rivers and Black Sea for their trade. The count actually is closer to twenty five.

Turkey lords over the Bosphorus and can blockade it any time. To avoid such an eventuality, it is mollycoddled. It is a member of the NATO and a partner-nation of EU. Turks have had a very long love-hate relationship with Germany and a very large number of Turks are naturalised Germans. Turkey can massacre the Kurds and gets just a pat on the back of its hand (Compare this with China's Uyghurs). Turkey can crown itself king of the Sunnis if it wants!

Maybe it's time the Bosphorus is made an international zone like the Panama Canal.

Ditto with Suez Canal and Kiel Canal.

Ten Things a Hindu Should Do While Using English Language
- Francois Gautier

  1. Please stop using the term "God Fearing" - Hindus never ever fear God. For us, God is everywhere and we are also part of God. God is not a separate entity to fear. It is integral.

  2. Please do not use the meaningless term "RIP" when someone dies. Use "Om Shanti", "Sadhgati" or "I wish this atma attains moksha/sadhgati/uthama lokas". Hinduism neither has the concept of "soul" nor its "resting". The terms "Atma" and "Jeeva" are, in a way, antonyms for the word "soul"(to be understood in detail).

  3. Please don't use the word "Mythology" for our historic epics (itihaaas) Ramayana and Mahabharata. Rama and Krishna are historical heroes not just mythical characters.

  4. Please don't be apologetic about idol worship and say "Oh, that's just symbolic". All religions have idolatry in kinds or forms - cross, words, letters (calligraphy) or direction. Also let's stop using the words 'idols', 'statues' or 'images' when we refer to the sculptures of our Gods.
Use the terms 'Moorthi' or 'Vigraha'. If words like Karma, Yoga, Guru and mantra can be in the mainstream, why not 'Moorthi' or 'Vigraha'?

  5. Please don't refer to Ganesha and Hanuman as "Elephant god" and "Monkey god" respectively. You can simply write Shree Ganesh and Shree Hanuman.

  6. Please don't refer to our temples as prayer halls. Temples are "devalaya" (abode of god) and not "prarthanaalaya" (prayer halls).

  7. Please don't wish your children "black birthday" by allowing them to blow off the candles that are kept on top of the birthday cake. Don't throw spit on the divine fire (Agni Deva). Instead, ask them to pray : "O divine fire, lead me from darkness to light" (Thamasoma Jyotirgamaya) by lighting a lamp. These are all strong images that go deep into the psyche.

  8. Please avoid using the words "spirituality" and "Materialistic". For a Hindu, everything is divine. The words spirituality and materialism came to India through evangelists and Europeans who had a concept of Church vs State. Or Science vs Religion. On the contrary, in India, sages were scientists and the foundation stone of Sanatan Dharma was science.

  9. Please don't use the word "sin" instead of "paapa". We only have Dharma(duty, righteousness, responsibility and privilege) and Adharma (when dharma is not followed). Dharma has nothing to do with social or religious morality. 'Paapa' derives from Adharma.

10. Please don't use loose translation like meditation for "dhyaana" and "breathing exercise" for "Pranayama". It conveys wrong meanings. Use the original words.

A powerful poem.

A poem by Prof Lee Tzu Pheng (Singapore Cultural Medallion winner). She was formerly in the English Literature Department in NUS. This is a powerful poem on human friendship and loving one another.

Sip your tea
Nice and slow
No one ever knows
when it's time to go,
There'll be no time
to enjoy the glow,
So sip your tea
Nice and slow.

Life is too short but
feels pretty long,
There's too much to do, so much
going wrong,
And most of the time you struggle
to be strong,
Before it's too late
and it's time to go,
Sip your tea
Nice and slow.

Some friends stay,
others go away,
Loved ones are cherished but not
all will stay.
Kids will grow up
and fly away.
There's really no saying how things
will go,
So sip your tea
Nice and slow.

In the end it's really
all about understanding love
For this world
and in the stars above,
Appreciate and value who truly
Cares,
Smile and breathe
and let your worries go,
So just sip your tea
Nice and slow.

When I'm dead.
Your tears will flow
But I don't know
Cry with me now instead.

You will send flowers,
But I won't see
Send them now instead

You'll say words of praise
But I won't hear.
Praise me now instead.

You'll forget my faults,
But I won't know.....
Forget them now instead.

You'll miss me then,
But I won't feel.
Miss me now, instead.

You'll wish you could have spent
more time with me,
Spend it now instead

When you hear I'm gone, you'll find
your way to my house to pay
condolence but we haven't even
spoken in years.
Look for me now.

"Spend time with every person around you and help them with whatever you have to make them happy, your families, friends and acquaintances. Make them feel special because you never know when time will take them away from you forever".

Alone I can 'say' but together we can 'talk'.
Alone I can 'enjoy' but together we can 'celebrate'.
Alone I can 'smile' but together we can laugh.

That's the beauty of human relations.
We are nothing without each other.
So stay connected!

A slice of history.

76 years ago on this day, PN Panicker had organised a mammoth meeting at Ambalappuzha to inaugurate the Travancore Grandhasala Sangham - with 47 rural libraries of Travancore - and the then Diwan of Travancore, Sir CP Ramaswamy Aiyer was the chief guest. And from then on, there was no looking back. In 1949, when Travancore and Kochi had merged, it became the Thiru-Kochi Grandhasala Sangham and finally metamorphosed to the Kerala Grandhasala Sangham in 1956.

When it celebrated its silver jubilee in 1970, PN Panicker through his own efforts, by going to every nook and corner of Kerala had set up a network of 5,280 libraries and made it a vibrant people's movement. He had undertaken a padayatra from Kasaragod, in the north, to Parassala in the south and familiarised the Malayalees with the powerful slogan, "Vaayichu Valaruka, Chinthichu Vivekam Neduka" (Read and Grow, Think and Be Enlightened).

The UNESCO  had awarded the Kerala Grandhasala Sangham with the Nadezhda Krupskaya (named after Lenin's wife) award for outstanding contribution to society.

When the Kerala Government took over the Kerala Grandhasala sangham in 1977, it was christened the State Library Council and it now boasts of 7,000 odd libraries under its ambit.

Today, we at the PN Panicker Foundation, commemorated the occasion at a small meeting in the courtyard of our office at Thycaud, opposite the Government Arts College. And we are concentrating our efforts towards the spread of digital literacy in every part of the state.

My doubt.

Why is the State Library Council quiet on such an important occasion?

IQ, EQ, SQ and AQ

According to psychologists there are four types of intelligence :-

* Intelligence Quotient (IQ)
* Emotional Quotient (EQ)
* Social Quotient (SQ) and
* Adversity Quotient (AQ)

Intelligence Quotient (IQ)
This is the measure of your comprehension ability, solve maths, memorise things and recall subject matters.

Emotional Quotient (EQ).
This is the measure of your ability to maintain peace with others; keep to time; be responsible; be honest; respect boundaries; be humble, genuine and considerate.

Social Quotient (SQ).
This is the measure of your ability to build a network of friends and maintain it over a long period of time.

People that have higher EQ and SQ tend to go farther in life than those with high IQ but low EQ and SQ. Most schools capitalise in improving IQ level while EQ and SQ are played down.

A man of high IQ can end up being employed by a man of high EQ and SQ even though he has an average IQ.

Your EQ represents your character; your SQ represents your charisma. Give in to habits that will improve these three Qs but more especially your EQ and SQ.

EQ and SQ make one manage better than the other.

And please don't teach children only to have higher IQ but also to have higher EQ and SQ.

Now there is a 4th one ; A new paradigm.

Adversity Quotient.
This is the measure of your ability to go through a rough patch in life and come out without losing your mind. AQ determines who will give up in face of trouble and may even abandon their families.

To parents.

* Expose children to other areas of life than academics. They should enjoy manual work (never use work as a form of punishment), sport and art.
* Develop their EQ, SQ and AQ. They should become multifaceted human beings to do things independently of the parents.
* Finally, do not prepare the road for the children. Prepare the children for the road.

Beautiful ten lines.

Need to understand the deeper meaning in them!

  1. Prayer is not a spare wheel that you pull out when in trouble but it is a steering wheel that directs the right path throughout life.
  2. Why is a car's windshield so large and the rear view mirror so small? Because our past is not as important as our future. So, look ahead and move on.
  3. Friendship is like a book. It takes a few seconds to burn but it takes years to write.
  4. All things in life are temporary. If they are going well, enjoy them, they will not last forever. If they are going wrong, don't worry, they can't last long either.
  5. Old friends are gold. New friends are diamonds! If you get a diamond, don't forget the gold! To hold a diamond, you always need a base of gold.
  6. Often when we lose hope and think this is the end, God smiles from above and says, "Relax, sweetheart; it's just a bend not the end!"
  7. When God solves your problems, you have faith in his abilities; when God doesn't solve your problems, He has faith in your abilities.
  8. A blind person asked God : "Can there be anything worse than losing eye sight?" He replied : "Yes, losing your vision!"
  9. When you pray for others, God listens to you and blesses them and sometimes, when you are safe and happy, remember that someone has prayed for you.
10. Worrying does not take away tomorrow's troubles; it takes away today's peace.

Why Is Gold Used In Satellites?

Gold is used on connectors and contacts because it has excellent corrosion resistance, high electrical conductivity (only copper and silver are better) and alloyed with small amounts of nickel or cobalt, has good wear resistance.

Satellites are wrapped in the golden colour foils to protect it and its components from the extreme environmental conditions of the space. Most of the components in a satellite which are mostly electronics has to be maintained within a certain range of temperature to keep it working, beyond which the equipment might fail. Likewise the propellants has to be stored at a particular temperature to avoid its freezing. So this Multilayer Layer Insulation (MLI) provides an enclosure to avoid heat exchange with the outer space which may be at 2.7 K (-270.45 degrees Celsius). You may require active heaters, coolers, optical solar reflectors and radiators also to get the complete thermal control. MLIs are basically kapton layer outside and Mylar layer inside. Outside layer is golden in colour to provide reflectivity against solar radiation. It blocks significant amount of the radiation loads on the parts where radiation loads are undesirable. Inside layer has very low emissivity to minimise the heat leak in any direction.

Conduction is the dominant property inside the enclosure to spread heat over the structure.

Gold is used because of its multiple benefits in outer space. Because of its excellent ability to reflect infrared light while letting in visible light, astronauts' visors have a thin layer of gold on them to protect their eyes from unfettered sunlight.

There will be a meeting, at 1100 hrs, on the courtyard of the PN Panicker Foundation to commemorate the occasion.

Tracking Bullet Holes On Allied Planes

Bullet holes on Allied planes that encountered Nazi anti-aircraft fire in World War II were tracked.

At first , the military wanted to reinforce those areas because obviously that's where the ground crews observed the most damage on returning planes. Until Hungarian-born Jewish mathematician Abraham Wald pointed out that this was the damage on the planes that made it home and the Allies should armour the areas where there were no holes/dots at all because those are the places where the planes won't survive when hit. This phenomenon is called survivorship bias, a logic error where you focus on things that survived when you should really be looking at things that didn't.

India being proactive.....

......giving it right back, for a change.

During his visit to the US last week, our Foreign Minister S Jaishankar participated with General McMaster, in a virtual discussion, conducted by the Hoover Institution!

He was questioned on India's handling of the pandemic.
He stated, "We are giving free food to as many as 800 million people. We have put money into bank accounts of 400 million". To underline his statement, he explained that India was providing food stocks to two and a half times the US population and funding more than its population. "How many nations were able to sustain such expenditure through these trying times and receding economies?"

On the global projection of a failing Indian government,
Jaishankar added, "I would certainly see this very much, as part of a political effort to depict our current government, in a certain way and obviously I have a very profound difference with that". In recent times, the global image of India, has been of funeral pyres, depicting a nation failing in its battle against the pandemic. The world has witnessed multiple waves of the pandemic!

Casualties have been higher in percentages in countries, possessing smaller populations in numbers and/or density, than India, including the US, European nations, Brazil etc. In no case were the deceased so disrespectfully depicted as in our case! The reality in the US was that Covid casualties were buried in mass graves, employing mechanical means and without permitting the next of kin to pay their last respects or be present! Human touch to to those, who lost the battle against Covid, was missing!

There were also reports of Covid casualties lying in refrigerated vans, for a long time in New York, awaiting mass burials. Photographs in US and Western media, displayed people laying flowers in open field, in remembrance of the deceased. In Italy, the situation was so depressing that the Army was called in to take over casualties and hurriedly cremate them, away from cities. Most Western nations, currently critical of India, adopted similar measures. Indians, on the other hand, cremated their dead with dignity and as per religious ethos, despite shortcomings and a spreading virus!

It was this display of religious reverence, in which, the media displayed to depict a failing nation. Victory against Covid is not determined solely by the number of casualties(Dead or infected), but by protecting the majority of the population, as also catering for their essential needs, during periods of enforced lockdowns. Number of casualties are dependent on the population and density within a nation; while they matter, they cannot be ultimate determinants. Success should logically depend on reversing the Covid cycle, with minimum inconvenience and suffering to the populace.

The fact that India being the world's second most populated nation, was bound to have higher casualties was ignored! There is no doubt the current government erred when it went ahead with elections, religious events and protests, adding to the spread. But why was India singled out globally? There could be multiple reasons, including internal political one-upmanship and anti-government groups grabbing an opportunity! India's national power has risen in recent years. It is immune to global commentators, who felt they could compel third world countries, to behave as per their whims and fancies.

India's refusal to change decisions, whether on Kashmir or the Citizenship Amendment Act, despite criticism from the so-called watchdogs or senators or members of parliament of the Western world, hurt privately funded influential organizations, many of whom control media houses. These were at the forefront, in tarnishing the national image. Another plausible reason is jealousy of the Western world in witnessing an Asian nation, becoming a global economic giant, overtaking most of their economies as also successfully countering the first wave!

India, till recently considered a third world country, is a rising economic power, where western leaders rush to sign trade deals. Grabbing a part of the growing Indian market, is a pre-requisite for economic development for any western country. This reversal in fortunes has hurt many influential organizations in the West. Western nations selfishly ignored third world countries and saved all vaccines and medical equipments, which they could garner for theor own populace, storing for more than necessary. It was India which reached out and supported weaker nations. Indian vaccine diplomacy earned it global praise, while the west was branded selfish.

Globally, Indian generosity was praised, while it reflected adversely on the ethos and responsibility of the developed world. India was no longer a nation, which could be ignored and this irked so-called global watchdogs and influencers. Politics within India, aided by some media personalities, also played a role in globally maligning the country. The opposition sought to target the current government but ended up tarnishing the national image! The pandemic was exploited as a political tool, for influencing public opinion, as India remains perpetually in an election mode!

Claims of false reporting, gained prominence. Governments are temporary and can change, depending on the will of the people in future elections, while the nation is permanent. Those who exploited the pandemic to hit out at the government, have harmed the national image, rather than an individual or a political party due to their short-sightedness. In the long term, India will win the battle against the pandemic and will rise again. It will continue supporting the globe in the fight against the pandemic. However, what will take time is changing the adverse image of the nation".

There was an eerie silence for a few lingering moments, followed by a huge round of applause, for more than a minute.

Jaishankar is a gutsy, no nonsense, on top of the latest geopolitics, articulate diplomat, who can hold his audience spell bound, with splendid articulation.

My take.

I feel proud of my country's steady all round progress thanks to the hard work put in by our PM Narendra Modi.

Tailpiece.

Got up at 6, the chores and was ready by a quarter to 10. Paid on line Lekha's Airtel bill and she got the confirmation immediately. My tough talking, over three e-mail, about their faulty receipt and accounting seems to have had effect. And you know, I've no bill this month for my cellphone as it's in minus!

Went to town to the bank, buy our weekly fruit basket and to buy dry herbs that we use for boiling drinking water.

Floods and a Railway Patrolman.

On 11 Aug 2021, C Vikas Babu, a track maintainer with the Southern Railway, put up a post on social media about the life of a railway night patrolman during the floods. Spelling out the challenges of his profession in exquisite prose, Babu clarifies that the note was not born out of jealousy for the Army and police being praised for their relief work. He just wanted to highlight the lonely and dangerous work done by his brothers.

"Most people do not even know that we exist. We mostly make it to the news only through obituary columns", he writes, nonchalantly.

"Night after wet night, a few solitary men have been patrolling the lonely rail tracks and the windswept bridges, the dark platforms and the wet, crumbling bluffs to ensure that you travel safely.

We are the men from the engineering wing of the Indian Railways. By night and by day, we guard the steel rails, the straight lines that have crisscrossed your lives so many times. We are there as the vigilant night patrolman, as the watchful gateman, as the rugged gang-man, as the alert key-man.....We guard your journey from end to end, just that we have different names, faces and roles.

Of all these avatars, I am writing today about the lone ranger of the tracks - the night patrolman. On monsoon nights, when the train thundered through the downpour and you sat looking outside, have you ever heard a fluting whistle rising from the inky darkness? Know this, for it is me - the night patrolman - calling out : "It is safe. It is safe. Pass without fear".

We often trek 20 km through the span of a single night, inspecting the raging waters under bridges, peering up at crumbling embankments and wondering if any of those towering trees groaning in the wind will crash across the tracks. My brothers often walk stretches through elephant and tiger country. Surprised? Don't be. All in a day's work.

Our feet get a break only once every five kilometres. Our shoulders, too, grow weary from the straps of the heavy rucksack cutting into them. Detonators, tricolour torch, gang board.....the bag is so heavy that rookies shrink at the thought of adding a water bottle. But, over time, the burden, water bottle and all, becomes habit.

Halfway into the shift, an unwelcome friend tries to get close - sleep! Still, we shoo that friend away and stay awake by the steel highway to ensure that you reach your destination rested and safe. The monsoon downpour quite often forces itself through the umbrella and the raincoat and then we dream of home, a warm bed and blanket. If the line above is electrified, quite often a buzz climbs down through the ribs of the umbrella and touches the skin on the neck, leaving a stinging sensation quite like that of a tree-ant bite.

Late into the shift, the torch grows fitful and sleepy. And that is when other dangers reveal themselves. I used to be petrified by the sight of pythons crawling out for a midnight meal. Now, I just give them a wide berth and walk on. Habit, like I said. But, one cannot ignore the python's venomous brethren so casually. The golden-scaled guy I saw the other night was as long as I am tall.

But, I cannot even dive deeper into my thoughts, can I? Because, if I do, I will not realise that the low moon on the horizon is the night mail rumbling closer every second. Like Rudra's third eye, a beam of light boring through the darkness. Quite often, when the train's whistle is blown away by the wind, that light is my friend. In the last fortnight, I lost two friends who were on key-man duty.

Not so long ago, I remember a friend trying to press himself into a wall as a train whistled past. Still, something hooked on to his clothes and jerked him away from the wall. He survived with injuries. The rule book says that I must stay clear of the tracks while signalling; standing on the other adjacent track is also forbidden. What if a second train comes that way and I do not hear it amidst the roar of the first?

Now, the floods are upon us. The waters keep rising under every bridge. In the darkness we walk across every bridge to ensure that the flood is well clear of the danger mark. And we walk the length of every tunnel to ensure that there are no cave-ins.

No one knows that we exist and hence, no one writes about us. Still no complaints. There is much more to add to my story, but it is time I left to walk the rails. There are trains waiting for me, you see.

Travel safe, for we are here. And listen.

Listen for the lonely whistle in the dead of the night.

Got up a trifle past 6, the chores and was ready before 0800 hrs. Today is Amma's 5th Remembrance Day as per the Malayalam calendar. Placed my offering at the courtyard as Lekha helped me with the details.

Medicare sends me the replacement today.

Had a long chat with Sudhakar, my classmate from Sainik School. Caught up with him after a long, long time.

The Four Levels of Friendship.

Adapted from the preview of the book, "Better You, Better Friends : A Whole New Approach to Friendship" by Glenda D Shaw.

(a) Essential Friends.

They are your core group. Shaw asks you to identify your aims for life and hers are "Curious, visionary, encouraging, enterprising and purposeful". The words vary from person to person but those who among this group will accept and support these values the most are your essential friends. They are your confidants. They will stand by you at all times, good or bad. There is nothing like a conflict between two people that brings out an essential friend. Just because you fear losing a friend and ignore the conflict, the suppressed emotion can surface later. Bring it out into the open. Discuss with your friend. If you can truly cross the bridge and resolve the conflict with empathy, you have an essential friend.

(b) Collaborators.

When Prabha's husband passed away due to Covid-19 during the first phase, even her close friends stayed away. Only a neighbour she did not know too well stepped in. Prabha feels that without the emotional supportand practical help she got, getting through the loss would have been too traumatic to consider. A month later, she got a new job and moved to Bangalore. Initially, she was in constant touch with her neighbour but over time the calls reduced. She had shared an emotional connection at that specific time when her husband died which was reinforced by physical proximity. It was crucial in that context but faded when the context changed and readjustment happened. Shaw calls them Collaborators. They are those friends whom you connect with when you have time and energy to spare.

(c) Associates.

These are people with whom you have a common interest or hobby like going to a regular movie club or the gym. You don't confide in them your deepest fears nor do you ask them for life advice. You don't expect anything from them and they are relevant only when a specific related context pops up. They might be at their best while working out or discussing a book that you realise their commitment, positivity and empathy. They may even become essential friends, who knows.

(d) Mentors and mentees.

Your boss may be your friend, but it is an unequal relationship. One person has more power and control. You have an equal say with collaborators, associates and essential friends, while mentors have achieved more and are older and hence, decide the depth of the relationship. These relationships are mutually beneficial and fulfilling. But not always though. Madhu married her boss after working for him for four years and quit her job. Now they are separated - he was too domineering. What Madhu thought was protection was in reality control.

Tailpiece.

Got up a trifle after 6, the chores and was ready past 10. Kittu didn't fetch up this morning.

He was, of course, there for lunch but with very less appetite. He ate up the fish and left the bulk of the rice behind!
