Arab's Martian Hope
The first Arab space mission to Mars is all set to blast off from a Japanese space centre on 15 Jul, with preparations now in the final stages.
A Great Step for the UAE
* This project is the next giant step for the UAE.
* The UAE sent its first astronaut into space in 2019.
Collaboration
* The spacecraft orbiter is a planned mission being built by the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space
Centre, University of Colorado, Arizona State University and University of California, Berkeley.
Car-size Probe
* The Hope probe will be hexagonal in shape, built from Aluminium in honeycomb structure with a
composite face-sheet. The overall size and dimensions of the probe will be comparative to a small
car.
Salient Features of the Explorer
* Weight 1,350 kg
* Antenna to communicate 1.05 metre
* Dimensions (with solar panels open) 3 m x 7.9 m
* Solar panels to charge the batteries 600 Watts
* EMUS Emirates Mars Ultraviolet Spectrometer is a far-UV imaging spectrograph.
* EXI Emirates eXploration Imager is a high resolution multiband camera that can capture
12 megapixel images.
What It Will Do?
* Researchers say the probe will provide a comprehensive image of the weather dynamics in Mars'
atmosphere with the use of three scientific instruments.
* The first is an infrared spectrometer to measure the planet's lower atmosphere and analyse the
temperature structure.
* The second, a high-resolution imager that will provide information about ozone; and a third, an
ultraviolet spectrometer to measure oxygen and hydrogen levels from a distance of up to 43,000 km
from the surface.
* The three tools will allow researchers to observe the Red Planet at all times of the day and observe
all of Mars during those different times.
It is not a short-lived mission, but rather one that continues throughout the years and produces
valuable scientific findings - be it by researchers in the UAE or globally.
Launch Date 15 Jul 2020.
Return to Earth Feb 2021.
In 2117, the kingdom plans to build a "Science City" to replicate conditions on Mars, where it hopes to build a human settlement.
Tailpiece.
Got up at our usual time, the chores and was ready by a half past 9. Wasn't able to connect up for the 'Aazhchakkoottam' at the Foundation due to technical glitches, yet again.
