What I shall always remember, however, is her role in the famous "Oadayilninnu" with Malayalam's legendary actor, Sathyan, that had the cash registers ringing in the late '60s. The story was Kesavadev's and it talked of an energetic rickshaw puller, Pappu, who supported a mother-daughter duo as he was fond of the little one. Their friendship had developed when Pappu's hand-drawn rickshaw had hit the girl on the road and injured her. Nursing her, he goes on to become a regular visitor in the house!
It was only a matter of time when the mother - enacted by a young Kaviyoor Ponnamma - begins to dream of Pappu as her man! The little girl grows up to be an extraordinary singer, played by KR Vijaya. Prem Nazir is her fiance.
Pappu dies of tuberculosis toward the end of the movie and scorches her dream forever.
Adieu chechi! My tears and prayers!! The Malayalam film world will be poorer without your 'motherly' presence.
My take
We'd wanted her to be the guest-of-honour in one of our programs during the National Reading Month 2024, but it didn't attain fruition because of her health-related-issues. She'd promised the Foundation of her participation in Panicker chettan's functions once her health was okay!
That shall remain an unfulfilled promise.
Tailpiece.
Got up at a half past 5, the chores and was ready by a half past 10.
Rajish and his assistant had come by to collect my blood samples for fasting and post prandial stages.
The maid was at work.
