Unnecessary controversies!

Just going through the news that are grabbing the headlines now. These days controversies arise pretty fast making a simple situation look ugly. Is it because of the lack of understanding of the situation or is it because of the mistrust that seems abundant or is it that everyone wants to air his/her views on any subject. It's really sad because each controversy spills bad blood.

To my mind, it's the lack of communication that allows doubts to creep in and therefore, it's incumbent upon all the concerned quarters to ensure that this aspect is kept pretty clear! I shall touch upon three incidents that have turned out to be unwanted controversies in recent days.

 (a) Justice KM Joseph's Elevation to the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court collegium has deferred a decision to reconsider its recommendation of the
elevation of Justice KM Joseph, the Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court, to the Supreme
Court. The matter has a backdrop consisting of the following:-

            (i) A while ago, Justices Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, Madan B Lokur and Kurien Joseph
had conducted a joint press conference questioning the role of the CJI as the master of the
roster - for the layman, the allocation of the cases to different judges of the Supreme
                 Court.
(ii) The four judges along with the CJI form the collegium.
(iii) Justice Kurien Joseph had made it public that he hoped Justice KM Joseph would get his
                 position in the Supreme Court.
(iv) The union law minister had said that the return of the file on Justice Kurien Joseph had
nothing to do with his earlier order quashing President's rule in Uttarakhand.

A controversy that could have well been avoided if everyone concerned maintained the
        decorum expected.

  (b) The 65th National Film Awards Distribution.

Of the 131 winners of the national film awards, this year, it was decided somewhere towards
the run up to the distribution that the President of India would be present at the event only for
an hour and therefore, distribute the awards to eleven winners. The rest of the winners were
slated to receive their awards from Smriti Irani, the Minister of Information and Broadcasting.
The resulting situation was unprecedented when 65 winners kept away from the function.

There are a few questions that I have over the matter:-

             (i) Why was it decided that the President would not sit through the entire event? Whatever
said and done, an awardee feels proud when he/she receives the award from the first
                  citizen of the country!
(ii) What gives an awardee the right to skip the function simply because the concerned
minister was giving away the awards? Is it infradig to receive the award from a minister?
(iii) Many of the award winners from the Malayalam film industry had kept away from the
function. Wasn't it an insult to singer KJ Yesudas and director Jayaraj, who'd participated
in it? Was there people's political affiliations playing a role in the unfortunate decision?
(iv) As somebody had turned around and asked, would these worthies return their awards and
the prize money for the supposed insult, I wonder?

   (c) The Latvian Tourist, Liga's Cremation.

Liga's mortal remains were consigned to the flames at the Santhi Kavadom in
Thiruvananthapuram after the police had confirmed - based on the circumstantial evidences
available - that she was drugged and raped before being killed by habitual offenders. The flip
side to it was that the district BJP president had moved the state human rights commission
alleging that the government was trying to close the case in haste! The cremation was carried
out despite the SHRC's restraining order.

The decision to cremate the body was taken by Liga's sister who said that it was the collective
         will of the family.

Tailpiece.

The highway that passes close by our place is a two lane passage. It's gonna get further narrow as sewage pipes have been unloaded for being laid beneath. The digging work, mounds of dugout earth and the work accessories along with the impending rains are gonna make the life of the motorists a living hell! When will we ever learn?
