Whither Hong Kong?

Pro-democracy demonstrators marched on one side of Hong Kong's famous harbour yesterday to demand the government heed to their requirements. Across the water, a pro-government rally called for an end to the often violent protests. The movement's demands are three viz.:-

    (a) Hong Kong's leader, Carrie Lam's resignation.
    (b) Democratic elections and
    (c) An independent investigation into police use of force.

The demonstrations have been on for 10 weeks and shows no sign of relenting. The airport has been affected and the resultant chaos has been witnessed by the entire world.

To quote a demonstrator, "The government right now doesn't listen to the people and the police are too violent. It never used to be like this. We didn't have to protest every week but, now, even though we have protests every week, the government still gives no response".

Meanwhile, members of China's para-military People's Armed Police force have been training across the border in Shenzen, fuelling speculation that they could be sent in to suppress the protests. Hong Kong police, however, have said that they are capable of handling it.

It's just a matter of time when China clamps in its authority and perhaps, take into custody the leaders of the protest. The wait is creating a great deal of fear and unease!

2. A Nuclear Mishap?

From the promenade at the water's edge in the city of Arkhangelsk, a view opens of the broad,
swift flowing Northern Dvina River and a smudge of greenery on the far bank. About 40 miles in
that direction, a still mysterious nuclear accident last week, released radiation, killed at least
seven people and tripped radiation meters in two cities, including Archangelsk.

"That if there was something to worry about, people would know. They cannot hide anything", is
a general viewpoint about the government, despite the official silence on details of the incident on
08 Aug that apparently involved the explosion of a nuclear propelled missile. Without knowing the
radioactive substances used in the missile, the nature of the fallout also remains unclear.

Meanwhile, at the Archangelsk Regional Clinical Hospital, where three injured were first treated,
doctors and nurses were not warned of radiation risks. Later, the doctors found that their scrubs
were causing radiation meters to click. Those who treated the injured were subsequently shifted to
Moscow  for treatment. And the locals continue to be in the dark!

Why aren't the doubts of the people cleared?

Tailpiece.

Suresh and Vijayakumar and their wives are not coming to Guruvayur. John V had a medical difficulty - he's all right and I'd spoken  to him late evening - and therefore, did not leave Bangalore as planned. Mohan and Asha had dropped by and it was a wonderful evening as the four of us exchanged notes.
