Today's Akshaya Thrithiya!

Today's the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Thrithiya and it's believed to have the following significance :-

 1. This day marks the beginning of the 'Sat yug' as well as the 'Thretha yug'.

 2. This day marks the beginning of the 6th avatar of Mahavishnu, Parasuram.

 3. The River Ganga descended to the earth on this day on the completion King Bhagirath's
     tapasya.

 4. Sudama visited Krishna at Dwaraka, this day.

 5. The Pandavas received the 'Akshaya Patra' from the Sun God, this day.

 6. Veda Vyasa began composing the Mahabharath this day.

 7. Adi Sankaracharya composed 'Kanakadhara Sthothram' on this day.

 8. Kubera received his wealth and the position, as the custodian of the wealth and it's believed that
     Goddess Annapoorna Devi appeared on this day.

 9. The construction of the chariots for the 'Rath Yathra' begins on this day.

10.In the temple of Kshira-chora Gopinatha (Remuna, Orissa), the deities of Madana-mohana,
     Govinda and Gopinatha are smeared with sandalwood pulp on this auspicious day.

11.In all the temples in Vrindavan, Chandan Yatra begins - lasting 21 days - the idols of Krishna
     and Radha are smeared with sandalwood paste to give them relief from the scorching heat of the
     Vaisakha month.

12.Barley, one of the main ingredients for homam or yagya - the yug dharma of the Thretha Yug, was
     also created on this day.

13.This day saw the end of the Kurukshethra battle.

This day is specially utilised and favourable for spiritual activities of yagya, daan and tapasya for pleasing Lord Sri Krishna.

Had got up a trifle late, the chores and was ready by a half past 9. The sky was overcast for almost the entire day but the rain was limited to a couple of drizzles.
