A new project for the union government's nod.

Assam awaits nod for 35-km elevated road via Kaziranga.

The Assam government is awaiting clearance from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways for a 35-km-long elevated road project through the world famous Kaziranga National Park.

Vital Stats

* Length of road     35 km
* Estimated cost     Rs. 6,000 crores
* 2 tunnels with estimated length of 1.5 to 1.6 km and 500 to 600 metres.

The road will run over nine animal corridors and an existing national highway. The basic idea behind the project is to ensure the safety of wild animals.

Earlier, the state government had submitted an alignment report for a two-lane road but the ministry suggested a 4-lane project looking at the increase in traffic in the future. The state government is expecting the clearance with the next fortnight.

The Kaziranga National Park field director has insisted on the removal of structures and human settlements from the nine corridors. Investment is not for road transport but for the smooth passage of animals from Kaziranga to Karbi Anglong and vice versa.

The project will not benefit Kaziranga if the settlements are not cleared. And they need to be compensated and relocated.

Got up at a quarter past 6, the chores and was ready by a quarter to 10.

The maid had got us good pork and made a tasty dish out of it.
