The United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), shaken by accusations of staff involvement in Hamas's 07 Oct '23 attack on Israel has now come under the crosshairs of Israeli distrust!
Aid and Protection
* The United Nations Relief and Works Agency was established in Dec '49 by the UN General Assembly
* The agency is charged with supplying humanitarian aid and protection for Palestinian refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including east Jerusalem.
* Palestinian refugees are "persons" whose normal place of residence was Palestine during 01 Jun '46 to 15 May '48 and who lost both home and means of livelihood as a result of the 1948 conflict", UNRWA says.
The 2018 Crisis
* In 2018, the US, the largest contributor to UNRWA, cut its annual contribution by $300 million
* In 2019, Donald Trump's Middle East adviser told the UN Security Council that UNRWA should be dismantled
* The same year, a report alleged mismanagement and abuses of authority at the highest of the UN agency. In Nov 2019, the agency's chief resigned
