When I'd joined the NDA, Poona as a I termer during Spring 1973, the spot was known as the Poona Crossing. The 'Restriction runners' used to go around the Poona Crossing while collecting the 'token' from the drill ustaad, on duty, during our times. But things have been changing!
It, then, became Chandni Chowk quite a few years later much after Poona metamorphosed to Pune and the 49th Course had passed out of the Academy in Autumn 1975.
The Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways renamed Chandni Chowk as NDA Chowk dedicating it to the city's iconic institution of tri-military education, the National Defence Academy (NDA), last Saturday. Indian Army's T-55, Indian Air Force's fighter aircraft MiG-27 and a scaled model of Indian Navy's INS Vikrant are now on display at the NDA Chowk.
These war machines symbolise the jointmanship which the National Defence Academy nurtures among its cadets who pass out from its portals to become officers in the the three services.
The NDA Chowk embodies the shared commitment of our armed forces towards the territorial integrity and sovereignty of our nation. It also recognises the values that our armed forces embody and is a testament to the unwavering spirit of our great nation.
The minister was inaugurating the newly constructed flyover at the NDA Chowk on the Pune-Bangalore highway.
