What an astonishing thing a book is....

It's a flat object made from a tree
with flexible parts on which are
imprinted lots of funny dark squiggles.

But one glance at it and you're inside
the mind of another person, maybe
somebody dead for thousands of years.
Across the millennia, an author is
speaking clearly and silently inside your
head - directly to you.

Writing is perhaps the greatest of
human inventions, binding together
people who never knew each other,
citizens of distant epochs.
Books break the shackles of time.

A book is proof that humans are
capable of working magic.

Tailpiece.

Got up a trifle past 6, the chores and was ready for Sajish, the khalifa, to give me a haircut at a half past 7. Went through my exercises on the bicycle and went through my prayers.

Appunni and Subi had fetched up at their usual time of 9 and went about their work. The washing down of the sun shades was completed.

Helped Lekha in watering the plants.

Had a tumble on the balcony but got off with superficial concussions. Phew!

Geeverghese, of Sabu Electricals, came in topped up the distilled water levels of the inverter and the battery of the solar lighting on the terrace.
