PIN code 193224.

The first post office in India which was until recently referred to as the last post office, is located on the banks of Kishenganga river near the Line of Control (LoC) in Keran sector of Jammu and Kashmir.

The post office bearing PIN 193224 is run by a post master and three mail runners. It was known as the last post office of the country until recently. Now the signboard near it describes it as the "first post office of India". It is located right at the edge of the PoK where the LoC divides the two nations. A stream passes between, known as Kishenganga river on one side of the LoC and Neelum river on the other. On the Indian bank of the river stands the post office.

With decreased cross-border hostilities between the two nations, the life of the locals and the post office wallahs have become easier! It is a historic post office, being operational even before the two countries were formed in 1947.

Tailpiece.

Got up at 4, the chores and was ready by a quarter past 5. Sukesan was at the gate with his vehicle on the dot and I'd quite a bit of time to take the long trudge and select a coach somewhere in the centre.

Lekha had given me a lovely breakfast of dosas and a big banana which I'd around 8, as the train reached Ernakulam.

Got off at Changanasserry and went by an auto rickshaw to Neelamperoor, at Paarayil Gopiyettan's house.

We split by a half past 12 and after seeing off Aniyan, I got a 'swift' around a quarter to 3 and reached home by a 5' past 8 and could watch 'Kudumbavilakku'.
