Arab government representatives in Cairo voted yesterday to return Syria into the Arab League. The vote came days after the region's top diplomats met in Jordan to discuss a roadmap for Syria's return, as the conflict de-escalates and Saudi Arabia gets to host the upcoming Arab League Summit on the 19th.
Syria's membership was suspended 12 years ago during the uprising-turned-conflict, which has killed nearly half a million people since Mar 2011 and displaced half of the country's pre-war population of 23 million. 13 members of the 22 member states that attended the session had endorsed the decision.
The Arab League generally tries to reach agreements by consensus but sometimes opts for simple majorities. There is still no consensus on normalisation of relations with Damascus.
Among the notable absentees was Qatar, which continues to back opposition groups against Syrian President Bashar Assad's government and continues to resist normalisation of relationship with Damascus.
The decision for Syria to return also includes a commitment to ongoing dialogue with Arab governments to gradually reach a political solution to the conflict, in line with the UN Security Council Resolution 2254.
The Arab League also set up a communications committee consisting of Saudi Arabia and Syria's neighbours Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq to follow up on the developments.
My take
Wonder how effective this decision is gonna be? May good thinking prevail and genuine help to the suffering millions in Syria find its away amid an honourable agreement!
Tailpiece.
Got up at 6, the chores and was ready by a 20' past 10.
Meanwhile Lekha had gone for a darshan of Lord Shiva at Mammiyur and on return, bought fish. Bought our fruit basket.
Helped Lekha in watering the plants in the evening.
