News views.

The results of the elections conducted recently in the north eastern states of Tripura, Nagaland and Meghalaya are interesting. BJP, that had no presence at all and with a vote share in single digits during the last elections, has stormed to power.

The results in Trpura have been the most spectacular. Manik Sarkar, the serving chief minister, was known to be a clean leader, free of corruption charges and known for his simple living, shunning all the trappings of power. So, was the rout of the CPI(M) because of the voters' fatigue over the long 23 years of communist rule? Or was it the charisma of PM Narendra Modi that did the trick? The PM has to be given kudos for the tremendous hard work that he puts in.

Let's hope that the new chief minister and his team provide good governance for Tripura.

Nagaland is headed for a coalition government while Meghalaya will witness a lot of horse trading and associated games for one of the political dispensations to assume power. As a prelude, the BJP president, Amit Shah's statement is enlightening - "BJP shall rule all the three states!" Our politics can never change!

But from what I've said above - which is anyway available on the media - there are a couple of things that I want to bring to the notice of my readers. And so, here I go:-

   (a) Last week, I happened to read in the 'Desabhimani' paper predicting a huge win for the
CPI(M) in Tripura from its own exit poll. I was surprised because all the other psephologists
said otherwise. I'm sure the seasoned ones in the party must have anticipated the results as
they're realistic, do their calculations and have their ears to the ground. So, why had the
newspaper said otherwise? I just can't fathom that.
   (b) The social media, going by the initial trends, had forecast that the 'BJP was at the receiving
end and went a step further to say that the saffron party was gonna going to learn its lessons
the hard way. The final results must have come to those naysayers as a rude shock.

My point is that when the election results are being announced it would be prudent to hold one's horses and wait till a clear indication comes out regarding the trends before going to town with one's misguided opinion. Otherwise, one would end up looking silly!

Tailpiece.

Had run errands to finish up most of the pending jobs. The most tricky was in getting the PIN number for Lekha's new add on credit card. Actually, she'd got it in end January and all my efforts to have the PIN generated by using the bank's toll free number - before setting off for the yatra - did not yield the results. Today, it was finally acquired. Thanks Sheena, you'd really gone out of the way to help us!
