Underwater Road Tunnel.

The Modi government has given the go ahead to construct a 14 km long underwater road tunnel under River Brahmaputra, which will have two different capsules (Tubes), for seamless movement of traffic from both sides. The tunnel will connect Gohpur (NH 54) with Numaligarh (NH 37) in Assam.

The tunnel will be of strategic importance as it will provide round the year connectivity between the North-Eastern states of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh cutting short the current road journey of 7 hours to just 45 minutes. The underwater road tunnel will be constructed with the latest state of the art technique which will help the vehicles to operate at a speed of 80 kmph.

Quoting a senior official, the construction of the tunnel is expected to start in December this year. It will be constructed in three phases and its total length will be 14.85 km.

The tunnel will have four lanes and even the heavy military vehicles and other services can be transported easily through this tunnel which will save a lot of time for reaching Arunachal Pradesh which shares international border with China.

The report also said that the tunnel will be longer than the underwater tunnel being built by China below the Taihu Lake in Jiangsu province. That tunnel is 10.79 km long.

The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHAIDCL) had roped in US firm Louis Berger which also prepared the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the same.

Special attention will be taken to see that no water leakage happens in the tunnel and it will also have a ventilation system for the flow of fresh air in the tunnel. Among the other security features that the tunnel will have includes emergency exit, drainage system and also equipped with crash barrier system.

Tailpiece.

Got up about a half hour later than our usual time, the chores and was ready by about a half past 9. Suma was on leave and it was Lekha's show all the way. Participated in the 'Quit Covid' programme of the Janus Initiatives under the aegis of the PN Panicker Foundation - it has kicked off today and will go on till 02 Oct.

Had a video call with my sisters and their families. Achu had fetched up at Thrippunithura, from Munnar, last night.

The episode of Rama killing Ravana was recited by Lekha, this morning, as she races through the Yudha Kandham. She has this coming week to finish the recital of the epic!
