Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) for submarines.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is working to conduct the first underwater trial of its fuel cell-based Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system in Bombay. The niche technology is being developed that will enhance the submerged endurance of a submarine several fold.

An AIP system gives a submarine the ability to remain underwater, away from enemy sensors, for a long time without surfacing. It has a 'force multiplier effect on the lethality of a diesel-electric submarine.

The underwater testing of the AIP will be conducted next year. The shore-based prototype testing was done in 2021.

The plan is to fit the AIP into the three Scorpene submarines that India is buying from France.

With its integration into the submarines, India will join an elite club of nations that have indigenously developed fuel cell-based submarine AIP technology. This technology is a green one since the by-product of the reaction is non-polluted water that can be released into the oceans.

Tailpiece.

Got up at 4, the chores and was ready by 6. Sajeesh was on the dot and we set off for Kochi. Breakfast, of idlis, was at the Saravana Bhavan at Edappalli at about a quarter past 8. Reached Mallan's clinic by a quarter to 10.

Lekha's dental problem was sorted out and hopefully, sometime next month, her new set of dental furniture for the upper palate would be in place.

Reached The Quarterdeck by a half past 3.

The evening chores.
