Just in jest!
Dateline 29 Sep.....
Everything I need to know about life, I learned from Noah's Ark.....
1. Don't miss the boat.
2. Remember that we are all in the same boat.
3. Plan ahead. It wasn't raining when Noah built the Ark.
4. Stay fit. When you're 600 years old, someone may ask you to do something really big.
5. Don't listen to critics; just get on with the job that needs to be done.
6. Build your future on high ground.
7. For safety sake, travel in pairs.
8. Speed isn't always an advantage. The snails were on board with the cheetahs.
9. When you're stressed, float a while.
10. Remember, the Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by professionals.
Got up in the morning, today, a bit later than yesterday. The alarm woke Lekha and me at a half past 5, the chores and we were ready by a half past 7. A quick breakfast of idlis, chutney and sambar, with Chittamma egging us to eat and we were headed towards Muhamma soon after. Reached Mallan's clinic by a half past 8 and therefore we'd to wait for a while.
The surgery was over by about a quarter past eleven. Four implants have been fixed on to Lekha's lower jaw. The doctor briefed us about the dos and the don'ts. Will have to return on 12 Oct for the removal of the stitches.
Took off for Guruvayur by 1415 hrs and drove straight to the Geeyem motors at Puzhakkal, Thrissur. The warning lamps of the engine and the battery came on many times during the journey though there weren't any effects on the overall running of the car. Spent an hour there for the mechanics to check. It seemed to be rogue calls on first look. They will take the vehicle tomorrow to have another check.
Lekha seemed to be okay except for the numbness she has, around the area of surgery. She had the medicines ordered by the doctor, food that was at room temperature and went about her usual chores.
Meanwhile, I'd opened up the house and and unpacked our bags.

Miyawaki forests.
With the diminishing forest cover all around the world, thanks to the indiscriminate clearing of large swathes of forest by mankind - in pursuit of livelihood - the extreme effects of climate changes have begun to be felt. Miyawaki forests have become increasingly popular, though it can never be a substitute to lush, natural forests. Let's try to understand this Japanese phenomenon.
The Miyawaki way
* Akira Miyawaki was a Japanese botanist who popularised the 'potted seedling method' or the Miyawaki technique.
* The Miyawaki way is an afforestation method where native species are chosen to create dense, multilayered forests that can self sustain after two years. It can be created in small patches of land, making it an attractive option.
* Miyawaki technique has 30 times more capacity to absorb CO2 than monoculture.

Adieu Jatinder Sidhu!
Jatinder and Lt HS Sidhu were a lively couple at INS Agrani, when I was posted there from Jun '84 to early '87. He possessed a fantastic sense of humour while she was a dignified lady, ever smiling, outgoing and helpful. Since Sidhu and I were contemporaries, she took me along as a close friend and well wisher.
I fondly remember the countless times that I had been at their place, be it for a Sunday breakfast of steaming paranthas and 'sarson ka saag', a quickly ruffled up biriyani lunch or a three-course dinner accompanied with lively music, heated/interesting conversations punctuated with frequent guffaws - they were good hosts.
I still have a photograph of her giving me a gift during one of the Husbands' Nights at the establishment, in my personal album.
After my tenure there, we never came across each other but I used to get information about their whereabouts from mutual friends. Some time back, she had suffered a spinal injury owing to an accident and was bed ridden. I'd the fortune to talk to her in that medical condition of hers, just before the onset of Covid and realised that neither had she lost the verve nor her zest for life and had retained the warmth and friendliness in abundant measure. And we spoke for very long then - now, looking back in hindsight! - little realising that it was gonna be our last conversation!
We human beings get busy with our own lives and do not spend time or efforts to nurture a relationship. It happened in this case, too, and I was smug at the thought that she was doing well, despite her unfortunate medical condition.
So, yesterday, it was like a bolt from the blue when my friend and senior, Ravi Ponappa - he was also with us at Agrani, gave me the sad news that she'd passed into the mist of time - and I quote, "Mrs Sidhu passed away due to cardiac arrest, after spending five weeks in the ICU, at Chandigarh. Perhaps, she was on life support systems as I make out. Cremation over. She was very close to my mother till mum passed away. She was with my mum for the entire duration of the cremation proceedings. Om Shanti".
Along with it was Sidhu's cryptic message, "With profound grief, I inform that my wife, Jatinder passed away this morning due to cardiac arrest. She was in the ICU for the last five weeks. Cremation took place at 1130 hrs in Chandigarh".
I can never forget the bubbly self that she was and have still not been able to accept that she's no more amid us.

Is Turkey the real leader?
Turkey, meaning Erdogan, wants to be the leader of the Muslim world. He has been doing a lot of things towards that position. Why is that country gaining precedence over Saudi Arabia?
Saudi has oil, that's it, nothing else. Many other sources for oil have been developed, so, Saudi is not unique.
Turkey has no oil but it has the Bosphorus! A strait that is in its territory and is an access/exit to the Black Sea and Danube. To understand the importance of the Bosphorus, one must understand the term 'land-locked country'. The black Sea has five countries, the Danube goes through nine (Romania and Bulgaria being common to both), so let us say twelve countries depend upon these two water bodies for their trade. Then the Don and the Dnieper rivers give access to the vast hinterland of Russia in addition to Belarus and Georgia. The count is now sixteen. Then land-locked countries neighbouring those that have direct access to these water bodies, also depend on these rivers and Black Sea for their trade. The count actually is closer to twenty five.
Turkey lords over the Bosphorus and can blockade it any time. To avoid such an eventuality, it is mollycoddled. It is a member of the NATO and a partner-nation of EU. Turks have had a very long love-hate relationship with Germany and a very large number of Turks are naturalised Germans. Turkey can massacre the Kurds and gets just a pat on the back of its hand (Compare this with China's Uyghurs). Turkey can crown itself king of the Sunnis if it wants!
Maybe it's time the Bosphorus is made an international zone like the Panama Canal.
Ditto with Suez Canal and Kiel Canal.
