China's human rights violations.

UN rebukes China over human rights concerns. The previous UN rights chief published a report on Xinjiang, highlighting a string of violations against minorities.

United Nations rights chief Volker Turk, yesterday, had demanded action from Beijing to address "grave concerns" over the human rights situation in Xinjiang province.

Turk has been under pressure from western nations and rights organisations to take a firm stand on Xinjiang following a bombshell report by his predecessor which cited possible crimes against humanity in the far western region.

The UN is concerned about the protection of minorities such as Uyghurs of Xinjiang and Tibetans. Quoting Turk, "Regarding China, we have opened up channels of communication with a range of actors to follow up on a variety of human rights issues. In the Xinjiang region, my office has documented grave concerns - notably, large scale detentions and ongoing family separations".

He also voiced unease over restrictions of civic discourse in China and the far-reaching national security law in Hong Kong in 2020 to stamp out dissent following the city's huge and often pro-democracy demonstrations.

Just minutes before her term ended on 31 Aug 2022, Turk's predecessor, Michelle Bachelet published a long-awaited report on Xinjiang.

Beijing vehemently rejects the charges and insists is running vocational training centres in the region to counter extremism.

My take

This is murder and the sad fact is that China will get away with it!

Tailpiece.

Got up at 6, the chores and was ready by a quarter to 10.

Off to Gireesh's shop to hand over the recharge dues and he seemed to be flummoxed.

Helped Lekha, in the evening, to water the plants.
