The toast of India - what a girl?

1. Our Pride and the Toast of the Country.

Perhaps, no one had heard of Hima Das till a couple of days ago until she won the gold medal in the women's 400 m, at the U-20 Athletic Championship in Finland. She had clocked a speed of 51.46 seconds!

Born on 09 Jan 2000, she hails from Nagaon in Assam. She aspired to be a football player but fate had different plans and she, ultimately, made a career in Athletics. Born to Ronjit and Jomali Das, she's the youngest among the six children that the couple has. She is, incidentally, nicknamed 'Dhing Express'.

Showing a maturity far beyond her age and exhibiting love to the place that she hails from, she has offered half her savings to the Assam flood relief fund!

May she continue to bring laurels for the country and God, do please take care of her and grant her all her wishes!

2. Adieu Sheila Dixit ji.

81 year old Sheila Dixit ji had passed into the mist of time yesterday. Three times chief minister of Delhi, I shall always remember the manner in which she changed the face of the national capital during her reign since Lekha and I were in the capital during those times. The building of a series of flyovers eased the traffic congestion and the introduction of CNG as fuel for the public transportation, brought down the atmospheric pollution of the city, considerably. The advent of the Delhi Metro and the support that she gave Mr E Sreedharan in executing the project, without any hindrances from any quarter, showed her administrative mettle.

RIP ma'am. With prayers and tears!

3. The Rain Has Weakened in Kerala.

After inflicting considerable havoc, the south west monsoon in the state has weakened. The population - especially, from the coastal belt and low lying areas - have been shifted to shelters to tide over the situation. The precarious levels that electricity had dipped because of less water in the catchment area, have perked up due to the good and timely rains!

It's hoped that the lull is temporary before the next wave fetches up in abundant measure!

Tailpiece.

It was a quiet Sunday when it rained almost throughout the day. Had run a short errand in the morning to buy vegetables, fruits and medicines. Lekha has been put on oral antibiotic from today.
